The Woodlawn Campus of the University of Chicago Charter School (UCW) opened in September 2006. The middle school currently educates students in grades six through eight and assists students in the following:

Behavioral Interventionist
Position Overview:
The Behavioral Interventionist will work closely with the Dean of Student Life and Interventions to develop a positive student life experience throughout UCW MS that include components of academics, social-emotional well-being, and behavior. The Behavioral Interventionist will be responsible for implementing a positive behavioral intervention support program that will address disciplinary infractions resulting in a detention or in school suspension. The Behavioral Interventionist will work closely with students to develop their leadership capacity and agency to foster a positive student life environment. This position will also focus on enrollment and successful transition into UCW. The Behavioral Interventionist will report to the Dean of Student Life and Interventions on a weekly basis to review data/issues and evaluate the effectiveness of systems/protocols put in place as it pertains to student life at UCW MS.

Primary duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
  • Demonstrate and work to instill Scholarship, Leadership, Excellence and Grit into the lives of all UCW MS stakeholders.
  • Implement and monitor a Positive Behavior Intervention Support Program
    • Manage In-School Suspension: Creating/designing a structured ISS program that reflects restorative justice practices
  • Manage Detention
    • Create/design a restorative detention process
  • Implement and monitor a peer mediation council.
  • Conduct peer conflict resolution/ peer jury discussions
  • Maintain communication with parents, teachers, and administration.
  • Refer students to administration or to the Dean of Student Life and Interventions as needed.
  • Work with the attendance coordinator to identify concerns and implement attendance initiatives/incentives to increase student attendance for all grade levels.
    • In collaboration with the Dean of Student Life and Interventions and administration develop and implement a comprehensive tardy system for students.
    • Contact parents of tier 3 students as it pertains to attendance and tardy concerns
  • Monitor the cafeteria during lunch and implement systems of order for students.
  • Serve as the Student Activities Advisor working to plan large student events such as school dances, homecoming, monthly activities put on by the student government association, circle. Guiding our students to conducting school wide student led activities that promote a positive student culture centered around building student agency and leadership.
  • In collaboration with administration, Dean of Student Life and Interventions and the main office, create a monthly newsletter to be sent to the UCW community that is informative and reflective of our four core values: Scholarship, Leadership, Excellence and Grit.
Qualifications:
  • Minimum three years of administrative school discipline experience (preferred)
  • Experience in successfully leading student peer-to-peer remediation
  • Experience with analyzing data around student life and implementing changes around improvement.
  • Experience working with adolescents and/or families, particularly in traditionally under-served schools and communities (preferred)
  • Ability to receive, internalize, and respond to feedback from campus and network leadership.
