GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK

Under the supervision of the Chief Academic Officer, the Director III - Curriculum and Instruction is responsible for providing leadership in the on-going development and improvement of the instructional, curricular, and professional development programs of the school division. Responsible for planning, developing, implementing, assessing, evaluating, and monitoring grades PK-12 instructional programs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Collaborate with district leaders in the appropriate implementation of VDOE Standards of Learning
  • Lead and supervise a division-wide integrated instructional program for grades PK-12, including supervision of and specialists, content specialists, and ITRTs
  • Coordinate cross-content integrated opportunities for an instructional program that may include oral language, fluency, reading, writing, math, science, social studies, STEAM, social-emotional development, and instructional technology
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of instructional methods and programs and recommend revisions and improvements as needed
  • Coordinate curriculum and assessment development, implementation, and revision
  • Visit school classrooms on a regular basis to ensure consistency of what is taught from school to school and teacher to teacher in grades PK-12, in partnership with administrators
  • Perform classroom observations and guide teachers in the improvement of instructional performance in collaboration with administrators
  • Revise pacing guides, curriculum guides, instructional strategies, and assessments in collaboration with content specialists, coaches, teachers, and administrators
  • Provide guidance in the selection of instructional resources, new textbooks, materials, and equipment
  • Work with school administrators and teachers in organizing and coordinating grade level and departmental meetings in order to ensure horizontal and vertical continuity and articulation of the instructional program throughout the division
  • Plan and supervise remedial instructional programs, to include coordinating and developing the summer school program in the schools
  • Oversee, coordinate, and evaluate the library media programs
  • Guide administrators and teachers in the improvement of instructional delivery and performance through a systematic approach to coaching, feedback, and job-embedded professional development
  • Assist in developing and conducting division-wide professional development for the instructional staff
  • Assist in preparing and monitoring the budget of the instructional program
  • Assist the human resources department with interviewing and recommending qualified candidates for instructional positions
  • Coordinate division-wide educational activities and community events in collaboration with administrators and teachers
  • Assist the Chief Academic Officer with the overall instructional program
  • Perform other duties as assigned

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Proven success record as a teacher, administrator, and/or supervisor
  • Considerable knowledge of planning, developing, implementing, assessing, evaluating, and monitoring grades PK-12 instructional programs
  • Ability to evaluate the effectiveness of instructional methods and programs
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with teachers, principals, and division-level administrators
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Graduation from an accredited undergraduate program in education supplemented by a master's degree in education administration or a related field is preferred
  • Minimum of five (5) years of increasingly responsible experience in education (teaching or administration)
  • Valid, appropriate licensure is required
  • Combination of education and experience may suffice for the above
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable
