Teacher: Special Education - Orton Gillingham Reading at Havemeyer Building for 2022-2023 school year

POSITION SUMMARY

The OG Reading Teacher serves as a part of the Office of Special Education and Student Supports, providing job-embedded and ongoing professional development for teachers, staff and administration in addition to providing direct instruction to students. The OG Reading Teacher will also analyze the literacy needs of individual students; and will plan and implement a structured literacy plan for and with those students. Candidate must be able to communicate effectively, and collaborate with staff, and administration. The candidate needs experience with direct instruction with students and coaching adults/adult learners.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Works with staff to ensure vertical and horizontal continuity and articulation of the instructional program within a school, as aligned to district and school improvement efforts.
  • Plans, evaluate, implements, and provide professional development/learning and teaching community
  • Enacts the following five principles when working with teachers: collaborating, modeling, observing, providing feedback, and providing support
  • Objectively gathers data to inform implementation planning
  • Gathers assessment data and instructs individual students and/or small groups
  • Individually and collaboratively analyzes student performance indicators, both cause and effect data.
  • Supports and empowers teachers to identify areas where they can improve.
  • Models instruction to demonstrate effective teaching practice.
  • Participates in the PPT process, as appropriate
  • Continually researches effective instructional practices
  • Encourages the use of new technologies, materials, and methodologies by professional staff.
  • Helps leadership in identifying and acquiring appropriate teaching materials, textbooks, and technology/equipment.
  • Conduct high level, intensive reading evaluations
  • Assist in data analysis and professional development creation and/or recommendations
  • Provide formal and embedded professional development and guidance for teachers to improve content knowledge
  • Provide formal and embedded professional development and guidance to improve effective teacher instructional strategies
  • Creates and delivers parent information sessions
  • Build the proficiency of teachers to meet the needs of all students
  • Provide educators with enhanced instructional practices to improve overall reading instruction
  • Identify methods to improve the level of student achievement in the area of reading
  • Establish and maintain professional relationships
  • Participate in professional learning by attending seminars and workshops to improve instructional practice and positively affect student achievement
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Office of Special Education and Student Supports

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS
  • Exhibits masterful teaching aligned to research-based practices
  • In depth knowledge of content area and experience working with best practices
  • Knowledge of concepts and principles of content area
  • Knowledge of improvement planning such as MTSS and Special Education
  • Ability to communicate ideas and directives clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Effective, active listening skills
  • Ability to work effectively with others
  • Organizational and problem solving skills
  • Excellent public relations skills
  • Ability to foster and facilitate learning and classroom management
  • Working with students and staff in diverse student population
  • Communication, collaborator, bilingual preferred

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Connecticut State Department of Education teaching certification
  • Orton Gillingham Certification, preferably Fellow level
  • At least five years of recent, successful teaching experience in the area of reading
