JOB TITLE: Alternative Education Teacher

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

Provide students in alternative education setting with appropriate learning activities and experiences designed to fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. Enable students to develop competencies and skills to function successfully in society.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Certification:
Bachelor's degree from accredited university
Valid Texas teaching certificate, with required endorsements for subject and level assigned
CPI nonviolent intervention certificate of training

Special Knowledge/Skills:
Knowledge of multiple subject areas
General knowledge of curriculum and instruction

Experience:
At least one semester of student teaching or approved internship
Experience working with challenging students

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

1. Develop and implement plans for the curriculum program assigned and show written evidence of preparation as required.

2. Prepare lessons that reflect accommodation for individual student differences.

3. Present the subject matter according to guidelines established by Texas Education Agency, board policies, and administrative regulations.

4. Plan and use instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment to accommodate the individual needs of students assigned.

5. Assess student learning styles and use results for instructional activities.

6. Work cooperatively with special education teachers to modify curricula as needed for special education students according to guidelines established by Individual Education Plans (IEP).

7. Cooperate with other members of the staff in planning and implementing instructional goals, objectives, and methods in accordance with district requirements.

8. Plan and supervise purposeful assignments for teacher aide(s) and volunteer(s).

9. Employ the use of technologies in the teaching and learning process.

10. Assist students in analyzing and improving methods and habits of study.

11. Consistently assess student achievement through the use of formal and informal testing.

12. Assume responsibility for extracurricular activities as assigned and sponsor outside activities approved by the school.

13. Provide and supervise physical education sessions as needed.

14. Present a positive role model for students to support the school district's mission.

15. Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate to the physical, social, and emotional development of students.

16. Manage student behavior in the classroom and administer discipline in accordance with board policies, administrative regulations, and IEP; use CPI nonviolent crise intervention methods as needed.

17. Initiate discipline plan training and administer level system for assigned students.

18. Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, staff, equipment, materials, and facilities.

19. Conduct group and individual conflict mediation sessions.

20. Assist in the selection of books, equipment, and other instructional materials.

21. Establish and maintain open communication with students and their parents.

22. Maintain a professional relationship with colleagues, students, parents, law enforcement officials, and community members.

23. Communicate information accurately and clearly.

24. Participate in the district staff-development program.

25. Demonstrate behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible.

26. Keep informed of and comply with state, district, and school regulations and policies for classroom teachers.

27. Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents required.

28. Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.

29. Assume supervisory responsiblity for campus in the absence of the principal as directed.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supervise assigned teacher aide(s).

Ability to communicate (verbal and written), instruct, maintain emotional control under stress, motivate and discipline students, and create a learning environment.

Physical Demenads/Environmental Factors:

Required to control student behavior through physical restraint and use CPI nonviolent intervention techniques.
