Position Summary:
The Postsecondary Coordinator (PSC) is responsible for teaching the Junior Seminar curriculum and supporting the Postsecondary Initiatives Team in meeting broader goals. The PSC is an integral part of the postsecondary continuum at Mastery Schools. The PSC is committed to serving and supporting urban, low-income youth, most of whom will be first generation college students. This role will inform, advise, and assist youth in identifying their best fit pathway(s): 4 year college, 2 year college, military, &/or workforce development.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Plan, lead and teach Junior Seminar Curriculum
- Build college and career exposure opportunities to highlight education, vocational training, military, and employment pathways
- Plan and present family engagement opportunities including Junior Postsecondary Financial Aid Night and Back to School Night Info Session, Report Card Conferences, and Family Postsecondary Planning Meetings
- Collaborate with Case Managers as needed to support students with learning differences in their postsecondary planning process
- Hold one on one meetings with students in 11th grade to provide guidance on postsecondary planning including transcript reviews, personality assessments, and college list creation
- Manage the Summer Opportunities program and goals for all grades
- Collect, monitor, and report data using Naviance, Microsoft Excel, and other platforms
- Assist campus-based Postsecondary Team with larger initiatives such as graduation, post-secondary fairs
- Participate in all College Initiative Team Professional Development
Qualifications:
- Familiarity with aspects of college counseling and career exposure programs, including college planning, career development, as well as matriculation challenges and other barriers faced by low-income, first-generation college students
- Familiarity with the SAT exam
- Exceptional organization skills - a detail-oriented approach to multi-task and meet deadlines under pressure;
- Strong proficiency with database systems - start-up and ongoing support/maintenance
- Ability to gather data, compile information and prepare reports as well as analyze data in order to make improvement recommendations
- Excellent communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills both orally and in writing with ability to effectively connect with broad range of constituents including alumni, their families, secondary and post-secondary school staff/leaders
- Comfort and demonstrated ability to successfully facilitate and engage various size groups
- Track-record of high achievement (premium placed on experience in urban communities and schools)
- Personal drive and commitment to serve urban youth
- Deep belief in one's own ability to significantly increase college going, persistence and graduation rates for Mastery alums
- Ability to effectively work alone and with a high-performing, mission-driven staff
- Consistently evaluates progress, using data to drive changes
- Demonstrated resilience to persevere and turn challenges into opportunities while meeting aggressive goals despite limited resources
- Ability to be a self-starter and creative problem solver while also being a quick learner who is willing to ask questions and seek feedback
Education & Experience:
- Bachelor's degree required
- At least two (2) years of experience with urban youth in educational settings in related college access and college retention fields, required
- School-based teaching or facilitation experience for groups of 25-30 students, using curricula and designing lesson plans highly desirable
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to physically perform the essential duties of the role - either on-site or remotely, and to work in the environmental conditions required, such as: traveling to network campuses; maneuvering in office spaces (including standing, walking, sitting for long periods of time, speaking loudly and clearly, seeing and hearing things both near and far away); stooping, kneeling, reaching file cabinets/shelves; fine finger and hand manipulation in use of computer, chalkboard, dry erase, &/or projectors; filing, faxing, scanning, coping, typing, mailing, and making phone calls; sitting for up to two (2) hours looking at a computer monitor, using a keyboard/mouse, and typing.
