JOB SUMMARY

The job of Bus Driver is done for the purpose/s of operating a school bus or other transportation vehicles in accordance with state laws and district policy; advising all students and other passengers of behavior requirements: completing forms, records and reports as required by State and District policy and procedures; maintaining control of passengers; maintaining cleanliness of assigned district vehicles; monitoring students with special needs; operating all hand and foot controls installed in the school bus; performing basic first aid; performing pre-trip and post-trip inspections; and performing other duties as assigned.

Additional Job Information : ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
-Performs pre and post trip assignment responsibilities for the purpose of ensuring effective coordination of assignments, completing required documentation and routine job-related procedures.
-Upon reporting to the work site, check communications for changes to schedules for that day, or upcoming dates/events.
-Complete time or log sheets or related time records/documentation.
-Ensure appropriate operator documentation is in the driver's possession before operating a vehicle (driver's license, bus driver endorsement, CPR/First Aid card, DOT physical card, etc.)
-Check district email, respond and/or send emails as appropriate to ensure effective communications with others.
-Conducts required daily pre and post trip safety inspections of bus/vehicle and related equipment and prepares vehicle for the purpose of ensuring the safe operating condition of the bus/vehicle in accordance with federal and state laws, and district procedures.
-Inspect vehicle exterior, including but not limited to, vehicle structure, tires, mirrors, fluids, lights, belts, hoses, windows.
Inspect vehicle interior, including but not limited to steering wheel, brakes, lights, seats, flooring, emergency door inspection, air systems, and radios. Check restraints, lifts and related items on special needs vehicles.
-As inclement weather necessitates, equip vehicle with chains and/or other emergency equipment or devices.
-Check vehicle fuel and fuel as required by district policy.
-Maintain related inspection records.
Uses proper technique for cleaning and disposing of bodily fluids or other hazardous items.
-Report malfunctions and follow up to ensure repairs are made in a timely manner.
-Maintains bus/vehicle cleanliness, including exterior manual wash and cleaning of all interior components, for the purpose of maintaining a clean vehicle, ensuring safe operating conditions and complying with federal and state regulations and district transportation policies.
-Follow an established schedule for the routine exterior cleaning of the vehicle, including manual washing of the bus exterior, tires and related equipment.
Perform interior cleaning pre and post trips as required to ensure vehicle windows, operator area, floors, seats, mirrors, etc. are clean and maintained to ensure safe visibility and a healthy environment.
Report needed repairs and follows up to ensure repairs are made in a timely manner.
-Document cleaning activities following district procedures.
-Operates a school bus and/or district vehicle in accordance with the laws of the State of Washington and District policy and procedures for the purpose of providing safe transport of students and/or other authorized passengers.
-Observe legal and defensive driving practices
-Assure compliance with applicable traffic and student transportation laws, codes, and regulations.
-Obeys all traffic laws, observing and complying with speed, lights, traffic and road signs or signals; railroad crossing stop requirements, etc.
-Maintain constant vigilance to the operating condition of the vehicle, road and traffic conditions, as well as the interior environment.
-Maintain the established route schedule adjusting arrival and departure times as required. If needed, provide information or guidance to others by radio, reporting delay or other route adjustments as they occur.
-Maintain knowledge of routes and related information to ensure effective and efficient route/trip completion.
-Adjust vehicle operation as needed to respond to observed situations.
-Manages student and/or other authorized passenger behavior for the purpose of ensuring the safe and orderly operation of the vehicle during transport activities and the safe and orderly boarding and exiting of passengers.
-Greet riders as they board and exit the vehicle to provide and support a positive environment for transportation of passengers and safe operation of the vehicle.
-Ensures special needs students are secure for transport, including assistance with boarding and departing (i.e. pushing or pulling a wheelchair onto the lift).
Advise passengers of rules, including items not allowed as part of the transport activity. -Monitor and enforce regulations as needed. Conduct emergency training with students and authorized passengers as required.
-Constantly observe passenger behavior. Takes action as needed, including stopping the vehicle if appropriate, to intervene and redirect the behavior.
-Enforces regulations against eating, drinking, use of tobacco, profane language, use of head phones or cell phones or other items in accordance with established district procedures.
-Check passenger authorization documents or information as needed. Transports only authorized students and sponsors. Reports trespassing violations.
-Discharges students only at authorized stops.
-Contact others by radio for assistance if needed.
-Communicate in writing or orally as needed to report appropriate and inappropriate passenger behavior.
-Maintains the utmost confidentiality with all student related information.
-Assists students with special needs as part of the boarding, transport or exiting process consistent with established regulations for the purpose of providing safe transport of special needs students and meeting their individual needs.
-Assist with wheelchair boarding utilizing lifts or other devices as needed.
-Assist with other equipment, devices or individualized assistance for boarding special needs students.
-Ensure students are appropriately restrained with seat belts or other restraint devices.
-Work with adult assistants that may be assigned to the route to assist the students, ensuring cooperation and effective supervision of the students.
-Maintain communications and required documentation as required to meet federal, state and district regulations, including the confidentiality of individual students and related health information.
-Responds to emergency situations as necessary for the purpose of acting as a first responder and taking steps necessary to process the situation, including communications for assistance from others. -Response may include administration of CPR and first aid actions.
-Make an immediate assessment of response and actions required and initiate appropriate action.
-Utilize radio or other communication tools to contact others for assistance as needed, including police, fire or other responder authorities.
-Administer CPR, First Aid or other first responder actions as needed, taking precautions to protect self and others.
Document actions and/or report orally or in writing consistent with established procedures for emergency responses.
In the case of vehicle accidents or incidents, cooperate with others including officials to provide information and complete required documentation. May be required to complete required drug-alcohol testing consistent with federal laws and established regulations.
-Promotes high quality public relations by utilizing professional communications and demeanor to promote the safe and professional operation of vehicles.
Ensure communications are timely and professional.
-Follow-up with operational and/or student or passenger issues as needed.
-Cooperate with a wide variety of persons to provide information and/or guidance.
-Manage the operational environment in a safe and professional manner.
-Utilizes radios and other forms of communications to effectively provide or receive information from others.
-Exercises responsible leadership when operating vehicles for non-regular route functions (field trips, activity routes, etc.).
-Ensure preparation by obtaining route information and details needed in advance of the route.
-Communicate with others to clarify special requirements.
-Maintain scheduled trip times, including documentation of trip information as needed.
-Prepares related logs and reports.
Perform all routine inspections and other route operations typically required for routine routes.
-Comply with operating restrictions for routes that are long in duration. Coordinate with others to ensure availability of drivers for extended routes.
-Observe required off-site performance behaviors (e.g. while passengers are engaged in activity and driver is on off-duty time).
-Complies with requirements to maintain bus driver licensing and/or other job knowledge, skill or ability requirements.
-Attend meetings or in-service training activities. Participate in and complete all mandatory training requirements.
-Comply with requirements for drug and alcohol testing.
-Maintain a valid Washington State Driver?s License and School Bus Endorsement.
Comply with authorization reporting requirements.

Qualifications : QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
The individual must be able to perform each essential job duty and responsibility satisfactorily. The following requirements are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities needed to perform the job at a fully acceptable level.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND/OR CERTIFICATION
Hold valid Washington State Driver?s License and School Bus Endorsement.
Must be a minimum of 21 years of age.
Possess a high school diploma, GED and/or evidence of math, language and communications skills at or above the 10th grade level.
Must maintain a valid CPR/First Aid Card.
Meet the standards of the district physical exam requirements for a school bus driver-operator.
Possess the equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Ability to write routine reports and correspondence consistent with the duties of this position.
Ability to speak clearly and effectively over a radio communication system, before groups of students and sponsors, and before groups or employees of the organization.
Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form using a variety of communication techniques and tools to ensure the appropriate flow of information, collaborative efforts, and feedback.
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret information.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
