Appalachia Intermediate Unit 8 is seeking qualified applicants to serve as a Special Education Teacher to provide hearing impaired services to learners with disabilities. The special education teacher position is a 187 day per school year position. Starting salary is according to the Agreement. A first year certified special education teacher with a Bachelor's Degree starts at $44,298.85 for SY 2021-2022 and $45,031.85 for SY 2022-2023.

Job Summary:

A Special Education Teacher/Teacher of Exceptional Children provides appropriate and high quality instructional services to learners with disabilities within the participating districts of Appalachia Intermediate Unit 8.

Qualifications:
  1. Certification as required by the Pennsylvania Department of Education
  2. Must be proficient in ASL
  3. GPA of 3.0 or greater in major
  4. Must possess current, valid Act 34, Act 114, and Act 151 clearances,as well as completed and acceptable Act 168 background checks
  5. Must be able to interpret, analyze and problem solve
  6. Must be able to converse and interact with individuals with diverse levels of education and abilities
  7. Must be able to:
    1. Read and understand documents relating to federal, state and local mandates, complex documents relating to education
    2. Converse and interact with individuals with diverse levels of education and abilities. Must be able to read and understand documents relating to federal, state and local mandates as well as materials relating to education
    3. Create an environment of respect and rapport, establish a culture for learning, manage instructional time and the classroom/physical space
    4. Demonstrate knowledge of student characteristics of age group(s), student characteristics of exceptionality group(s), and pedagogy
    5. Demonstrate knowledge of content/area of specialization
    6. Demonstrate knowledge of Pennsylvania Academic Standards
    7. Design student assessments that reflect the goals and format of national, state, and local academic standards adapted according to the individual needs of the student and are aligned to the instructional goals
    8. Demonstrate appropriate instructional design and methodology aligned with the instructional/IEP goals
    9. Utilize a structured system and format for planning and instruction
    10. Select and utilize appropriate materials and resources in planning and preparation specific to the individual area of expertise
    11. Demonstrate knowledge and use of assessment data to develop and monitor effectiveness of current educational plans, interventions or programs
    12. Apply knowledge of strategies, interventions and methodologies
    13. Have high and clear expectations for all students to participate and demonstrate understanding and achievement
    14. Demonstrate flexibility in responding to students
    15. Communicate effectively in verbal or written form in a professional and timely manner with parents/guardians, students, district/entity, personnel and community agencies
    16. Maintain accurate and timely instructional and non-instructional records with attention to designated timelines
    17. Demonstrate regular and timely attendance
    18. Adhere to IU policies, procedures and expectations as well as the Professional Code of Conduct
Working Conditions:

In the course of performing the duties and functions of a Special Education Teacher the holder of the position will be required to stand, walk, sit, squat/stoop, reach and lift items of varying weights.

Work Environment:

Normal office, presentation room and classroom environment. Travel in personal vehicle is required.
