The College and Career School Counselor is charged with developing a college going culture that supports all students' academic, career and personal/social developmental needs by contributing to the design, implementation, and evaluation of a comprehensive school counseling program. The School Counselor follows American School Counselor Association's (ASCA) Ethical Standards. Eighty percent of the Counselors' time is spent providing direct and indirect services to students (ASCA) as part of a comprehensive school counseling program that promotes student success, and offers proactive supports to all students with a focus on equity and expanding access.

Goals of the Position:
  • To increase the percentage of students accessing Diploma Plus credentials and courses, including AP courses, college courses and industry-approved CTE Credentials
  • To increase FAFSA completion rates
  • To increase graduation rates
  • To provide targeted support to students with identified achievement gaps
  • To ensure students' equitable access to effective comprehensive counseling programs
RIDE/LEA Expectations:
  • Act as a liaison for the PrepareRI School Counseling Corp program to RIDE
  • Facilitate the gathering of school/district data for tracking in the ASCA portal
  • Attend PrepareRI School Counseling Corp trainings and related meetings
    Additionally, the counselor will:
  • Become members of a professional learning community where purposeful collaboration, flexibility, innovation and shared decision making are encouraged
  • Participate in all district and school-based professional development inclusive of working with internal (coaches) and external (consultants) supports

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES AND CURRICULAR LINKAGES
  • Launch and co-lead with an administrator a Post-Secondary Leadership Team
  • Ensure all students are on track for post-secondary success
  • Manage a caseload of 50 students to service academic, college and career, and social emotional development
  • Strategically lead a school-wide effort to provide a structure to support students with the post-secondary planning- college application process, college essays, FAFSA completion, and scholarship, ACN coursework, CTE credentials, and alternative plans
  • Ensure the school has a college and career culture by coordinating activities such as multiple College Fairs, College Signing Day and Family Scholarship and Financial Aid Events
  • Serve as a liaison with college, universities, and industry workforce to partner and provide students access and experience
  • Applies school counseling professional standards and competencies
  • Designs and implements instruction aligned to the ASCA Mindsets & Behaviors for Student Success in large-group, classroom, small-group and individual settings; uses the ASCA Mindsets and Behaviors to inform the implementation of a school counseling program
  • Participates in the annual development of the school counseling program goals, student outcome goals and related evaluation activities based on student data
  • Looks for opportunities to integrate school counseling curriculum with curriculum with other disciplines
  • Tracks, analyzes, and presents student and school-related data with the goal of promoting school success and student effectiveness and assessing the effectiveness of the school counseling program
  • Applies current research-based instructional best practices and strategies to deliver curriculum
  • Promotes equity and access to rigorous educational experiences for all students
  • Coordinate, implement, and monitor a school wide, District approved Advisory and Individual Learning Plan program, and works with students to develop and revise Individual Learning Plans (ILPs)
  • Displays deep knowledge of philosophical foundations and content of school counseling curriculum
  • Provides services and/or makes referrals to appropriate school and community resources.
  • Works collaboratively with teachers and administrators to support student achievement and success
  • Provides orientation, coordination and academic advising for new students
  • Performs other duties as designated by the building administrator
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS STANDARDS
  • Current Rhode Island Department of Education School Counseling Certification
  • Skilled in collaborating with colleagues
  • Skilled in facilitating groups and large classes
  • Results-oriented, organized, adaptable, and highly motivated to serve all students
  • Knowledgeable about the ASCA National Model and the components of a comprehensive school counseling program
  • You must complete the new hire compliance training prior to your first day of employment
  • Bilingual Preferred
  • Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check. Selected candidates cannot begin work until passing their background check.
