QUALIFICATIONS: Valid New York State Certification as School Counselor
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Provides direct instruction and services to students to address academic, personal, social, or emotional issues related to their educational progress and achievement as delineated in the Comprehensive Counseling Plan.
  2. Consults with students, parents, teachers, administrators and members of both the school and the student services team to define and implement an appropriate instruction given students' strengths, aptitudes, interests and long-term career goals.
  3. Facilitates access to career exploration and planning tools utilizing Social Emotional Skills and Competencies.
  4. Works closely with outside providers, staff members, parents and other specialists to assist in the assessment, planning and program development for all students.
  5. A sitting member of the Child Support Team.
  6. Initiates and plans in-service programs for staff, parents and community members as it relates to Social Emotional Learning.
  7. Assists in the development of prevention programs and provides counseling and crisis intervention for individuals and small groups as the need arises within the classroom setting.
  8. Communicates clearly and succinctly in both oral and written form, supervises the appropriate use and confidentiality of student records, and maintains reports of contacts with students, parents, and school social workers/psychologist as related to specific students.
  9. Serves on established committees; such as: the school Wellness Committee and attends meetings as required including beyond the normal professional workday.
  10. Demonstrates a comprehensive understanding of New York State learning standards, the Counseling Plan, FERPA, and state regulations.
  11. Evidences a clear commitment to professional growth and skill development.
  12. Works with families in conjunction with school social worker and/or psychologist to facilitate understanding, promote constructive participation in resolving difficulties their child(ren) may be experiencing, and increase awareness of the availability of appropriate resources, making referrals to community agencies, services and programs for additional services when appropriate.
  13. Demonstrates a willingness/ability to contribute to the school community through participation in school-wide events.
  14. Additional responsibilities as assigned by the Building Administration and/or Office of Student Services.
  15. Experience working with students with disabilities and familiar with all IDEA and 504 regulations.
  16. Skilled at working with classroom teachers to establish direct Social Emotional Learning within their classrooms on a consistent basis.

  • Prior elementary school counseling experience - 2-3 years preferred
  • Background knowledge and experience with special education students
  • Creative and willing to assert himself or herself when working with staff in developing programs
