The filling of this position is based upon continued funding in the Board of Education budget.

Note: Teachers dually certified in TESOL, Bilingual Education or ESL, with experience in Sheltered Instruction or fluency in a language other than English, will be given preference for all Stamford Public School positions.

General Statement:
The Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment - Secondary (6-12) is responsible for designing and implementing the curriculum framework, developing the process for creating curriculum, monitoring the implementation of curriculum, and ensuring the identification of guaranteed instructional best instructional practices by content-area and grade level. The position is accountable for ensuring the alignment of curriculum, instruction, and assessments district-wide.

The Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment - Secondary (6-12) reports to the Associate Superintendent for Teaching & Learning.

Major Responsibilities:

Directs all aspects of the following areas:
  1. Curriculum Development and Implementation (70%)
    1. Define and Design Curriculum Development Procedures - Collaborates with Associate Superintendent of Teaching & Learning to develop district curriculum philosophy and identify transdisciplinary skills and dispositions; develops curriculum design framework (standards; power standards); oversees vetting of curriculum units to be shared across the district; designs framework and curriculum template; develops and supports e-platform for sharing of units across the district; ensures that technology is integrated with curriculum resources; ensures horizontal and vertical curriculum alignment 6-12; develops rubrics that outline requirements for successful response on curriculum-aligned assessments
    2. Define Guaranteed Instructional Practices - Oversees and develops instructional strategies to ensure equitable and increased access to rigorous curriculum at the 6-12 level. Identifies guaranteed instructional practices by subject area, for example, Block Scheduling; establishes best practice instructional strategies; determines expectations for lesson design; determines level and rigor of instruction expectations; plans for differentiated instruction.
    3. D efine Guaranteed Assessment Practices - Oversees assessments including universal screeners such as PSAT, Math Inventory, and Reading Inventory.
    4. Oversee 6-12 Department Heads and K-12 Content Leaders - Oversees 6-12 Department Heads and K-12 Content Leaders in curriculum development and renewal processes and providing professional development and resources to schools in curriculum design, implementation, and best instructional strategies.
    5. Tier 1, 2, and 3 Instruction and Intervention - Collaborates with the Coordinator of SRBI to develop a philosophy for implementation for progress monitoring 6-12 to ensure the alignment of Tier 1 instruction with Tier 2 and Tier 3 instruction and interventions.
    6. Develops Content for New Teacher Orientation - Identifies curriculum, instruction, and professional development needs for all new 6-12 teachers; develops content for new teacher orientation for newly hired teachers throughout the year.
    7. Develops Professional Development - Identifies curriculum, instruction, and professional development needs for all 6-12 teachers throughout the year.
  2. Program Evaluation and Development (20%)
    1. Program Evaluation - Collaborates with Associate Superintendent of Teaching and Learning to identify curriculum, assessment, and instruction for evaluation; determines data to be collected for program evaluation; analyzes program evaluation data and prepares program improvement recommendations based on data; gathers annual stakeholder feedback to ensure continuous program improvement.
  3. Other Duties (10%)
    1. Coordinates with Board of Education departments, including but not limited to Teaching and Learning, Intervention and Support Services, and School Development
    2. Collaborates with the Coordinator of College and Career, Director of Adult Education, and Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment - Elementary (PreK-5) to ensure vertical alignment of curriculum, instruction, and assessment.
    3. Chairs and participates in committees as requested by the Associate Superintendent of Teaching and Learning.
    4. Performs additional duties as assigned.
  4. Supervises the following:
    1. All 6-12 Department Heads and all K-12 Content Leaders
    2. Others, as required.

  • Experience developing curriculum, assessment, and best instructional instruction 6-12 with a focus on transdisciplinary and 21st Century skills
  • Ability to collaborate as part of an integrated team and develops a collegial environment within the school to support all students.
  • Knowledge of learning theory, program implementation, best practices in curriculum and instruction, and assessment processes.
  • Experience identifying curriculum and instruction professional development needs for all teachers; develops content for New Teacher Orientation and professional development for newly hired 6-12 teachers throughout the year.
  • Use of data-driven decision making to determine effectiveness of programs and initiatives.
  • Excellent conceptual, analytical, problem solving, organization, and leadership skills.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, policies, and procedures related to public schools, specifically related to special education, English Learners, and related services.
  • Knowledge, understanding, and experience with 6-12 District initiatives
  • Understanding of English Learner instructional strategies, instruction within block scheduling, intervention strategies, and cognitive coaching
  • Ability to analyze and synthesize information, develop and monitor a plan and produce data-focused reports in collaboration with the Research Department
  • Proven track record delivering professional development of best instructional practices to all District stakeholders
  • Knowledge of and/or demonstrate the ability to learn and implement Operating Systems (i.e. Windows); Office suites (i.e. Microsoft Office, Google Docs); Presentation Software (i.e. PowerPoint, Keynote); Spreadsheets (i.e. Excel, Google Spreadsheets); Communication and Collaboration tools (i.e. Skype); Accounting Software (i.e. QuickBooks); Student Information Systems (i.e. Naviance, Power School); or any other technology deemed relevant for this position.
  • Strong record of budget development/administration & understanding financial resources.
  • Self-directed with attention to detail and excellent time management skills.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills and a proven track record of working collaboratively with multiple and diverse constituencies.
  • High standards of ethics, honesty, and integrity.

Qualifications:
  • CT CSDE Intermediate Administration or Supervision certification (092).
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in a position relating to curriculum, instruction, assessment, and professional development
  • Experience in an urban district, preferred.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent and/or Stamford Board of Education may find appropriate.
