PURPOSE OF JOB:

Support elementary classroom teachers in the development and preparation of science lab experiences for elementary school students; provide each assigned elementary school student in the building(s) with regular lab experiences throughout the school term, supporting all elementary school teachers teaching science in the assigned building(s); utilizing science resources and supplies adopted by the district and appropriate learning activities, guides, textbooks and other instructional materials provided by the school.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Develop and schedule regular lab experiences that support classroom science curriculum in collaboration with teachers. Lab activities will be standards-based, inquiry-focused experiences that integrate rigorous science content with academic language and math skills, to serve our diverse population of students and provide them an effective environment for learning. Develop lab experiences which adapt the curriculum to the needs of all students. Participates in curriculum development within the assigned school and at the district level.


  • Set up lab for each class experience. This includes actual setup of the lab experience, cleanup between class sessions, and resetting all materials subsequent class sessions. The science lab technician will manage the science lab at their assigned location(s), including keeping an inventory of major equipment in the lab and the handling of broken equipment. This includes developing lab procedures, teaching lab safety, and monitoring student safety protocols, as well as procuring needed equipment, supplies and presentation visuals from district coordinators.


  • When given prior notice, provide science teachers professional development opportunities and coaching teachers with in-class mini-labs. Create demonstrations that allow teachers to preview lab experiences, see examples of student work and support their own learning prior to covering course materials with students. This may include co-teaching and giving feedback to teachers, as well as writing, providing, or procuring professional development opportunities for teachers on an ongoing


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: None

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Three years of experience in teaching science effectively, preferably elementary school level
  • A working knowledge of the NGSS and Common Core
  • Strong collaborative skills needed to organize support.
  • Preferred Qualification: valid MO teaching certification in any area of science
