Position Summary: The Maintenance Supervisor will support the Parish mission priority dedicated to the stewardship of our material resources. St Michael Poplar Springs located in Mount Airy Maryland in western Howard County serves over 1400 families, 65 preschool students, and 400 faith formation students. The Maintenance Supervisor has responsibility for all aspects of maintenance to ensure a clean, safe and efficient physical plant for all locations affiliated with St. Michael Catholic Church. Ensure that the parish buildings, equipment, and grounds (including parking lots, sidewalks, and cemetery grounds) are maintained appropriately through a program of planned maintenance and asset management. In conjunction with the Pastor and Parish Business Manager, direct and oversee major projects for remodeling, maintaining, and improving the physical plant and grounds. Supervises and provides leadership and work guidance to the custodian and janitorial staff.

Essential Functions:

Ensure the overall cleanliness and safe operations of all parish buildings and properties through the performance of regular and routine cleaning, maintenance, and janitorial duties. Oversee performance of such duties by support staff; perform such duties as needed.
  • Confirm and manage any required corrective action to ensure that the interior and exterior of the buildings present a suitable image
  • Prepare facilities for public use by managing an appropriate schedule so that the lavatories and all rooms are appropriately clean and materials are re-stocked
  • Develop procedures for after-duty hours emergencies including holidays and weekends.
  • Ensure that all buildings (Rectory, Small Church, and 1125 Complex), equipment, and grounds (including cemetery grounds) are maintained appropriately through a program of planned maintenance and asset management.
  • Assist Business Manager in preparation of budgets and contracts for maintenance projects following Parish Finance Committee procedures to obtain materials, labor, and equipment needed.
  • Survey grounds, buildings, and systems on a continual and proactive basis to identify potential and real problems and identify the most cost-effective ways to resolve and affect resolution in an economical and timely basis.
  • Ensure the operational capability of the following systems: HVAC, security alarm, audio, and lighting.
  • Ensure the proper maintenance of the roadways, parking lots, fields, trees, and plantings of the parish property.
  • Engage in a full range of supervisory duties for maintenance and custodial staff: train and review performance
  • Ensure that staff is instructed on safety standards, new maintenance procedures, practices, and materials. This includes compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requirements and with employee use of personal protection equipment (PPE). Establish and ensure immediate follow-through with corrective action for any possible safety/hazardous material concerns.

  • Education, Training, and/or Experience:
  • High School Diploma or trade school, Bachelor's Degree preferred
  • Minimum five years prior experience in minor repair work for multiple facilities, including cleaning, building and equipment repair and maintenance, and grounds-keeping
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently without direct supervision and make judgments related to emergency and safety matters
  • Experience with automated security and HVAC scheduling systems
  • Must be able to perform very heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force
  • Must possess a valid State driver's license with no more than 3 current points.
  • Must possess the visual acuity and manual dexterity to operate mobile equipment in a safe manner
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, walk and stand; talk or hear, both in person and by telephone; use hands repetitively to finger, handle, feel or operate standard office equipment; reach with hands and arms; and lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
