Summary:

The Student Engagement Advocate will support schools with the implementation of strategies and programs designed to significantly increase average daily attendance at the school site, district truancy reduction processes, intentional school culture programs and activities. Case management services will be provided to target truant students and their families. The advocate will support schools in collaborating with families to assist students in overcoming barriers to school engagement and success by addressing risk and protective factors; by working with the school staff, student and family to set short term and long-term goals; by accessing meaningful school, district, and community interventions and resources; and by advocating for the student in school and in the community. May assist with translation and/or communication using second language skills when possible.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities Daily 5% Participate in planning and problem solving with team members and staff at school sites. Daily 25% Support teams at schools with the implementation of programs and strategies related to increasing student attendance, reducing student suspension/expulsion and responding to students demonstrating significant attendance problems through the truancy prevention and reduction process, including the Community Attendance Review Board (CARB) process, assist schools to build their own capacity to analyze student engagement data, maintain accurate records, and to develop and implement effective strategies and actions. Support schools with procedures and programs related to student enrollment and attendance at the beginning of the school year. Daily 10% Collaborate with district support teams, System Support Specialist and various school-based teams to conduct regular home visits and meetings with students and families to provide case management services; communicate regularly with family, school and district personnel regarding student progress and interventions. Daily 10% In partnership with school staff, assess risk and protective factors for the student and family; provide assistance to the student/family in overcoming barriers to regular school attendance. Daily 5% In support of school staff, assist students/families in accessing meaningful and appropriate interventions and resources; make needed community, educational, and co-curricular referrals in collaboration with parent; follow-up regularly; assess success of interventions. Wkly 5% Engage in training, either collaboratively or individually, related to identify programs and strategies. Wkly 35% Complete and provide documentation needed for the school and court systems; may appear before Magistrates in court representing the school district and serving as an advocate for the student and family. Daily 5% Perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING:

Bachelor's degree; complete crisis prevention and intervention (CPI) training within 3 months of hire.

EXPERIENCE:

Over 2 years and up to and including 5 years of experience, bilingual preferred.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, EQUIPMENT & OTHER:

Oral and written communication, excellent interpersonal, organizational, presentation, time management, facilitation, mediation, and decision making skills. Ability to work with students and families with diverse backgrounds and abilities. Ability to diffuse volatile situations. Operating knowledge of and experience with computers. Operating knowledge of word processing, spreadsheets and internet applications and general office equipment required within three months after hire. Bilingual oral and written skills preferred. Must be a self-starter who can work with a minimum of supervision. English language skills required. Oral and written fluency in second language may be preferred or required based on building assignment.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, & REGISTRATIONS:

Valid Colorado driver's license and automobile insurance.

SUPERVISION/TECHNICAL RESPONSIBILITY:

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle or feel, talk and hear. The employee is frequently required to stand and walk. The employee is occasionally required to sit and reach with hands and arms. The employee may frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. There are no special vision requirements for this position.
