POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Director of the Fellowship in Special Education will set vision, lead and manage the Fellowship in Special Education - a special education teacher training program for over 65 DC educators each year. The program involves summer professional development, weekly evening professional development, coaching of Fellows, completion of 5 rigorous projects, and eligibility for certification through OSSE. The Director will manage one team member and will also be a valued member of the Knowledge and Learning Team, the KIPP DC team responsible for teacher and leader pathways and developments. This is a full-time, exempt role.

Job Description

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Programmatic Vision and Goal-Setting (20%)
  • Set vision and annual goals for the teacher certification program
  • Identify new initiatives or changes needed and lead the planning and execution of these


Professional Development and Coaching (30%)
  • Design and lead 3 full-days of introductory professional development sessions for Fellows
  • Prepare and facilitate (and/or oversee facilitation) of weekly 3 hour professional development sessions for teachers
  • Provide (and oversee) small group and individual coaching for fellows


Other Program Design and Execution (20%)
  • Design and refine program materials such as the handbook, policies, and graded projects
  • Grade Fellows' projects and provide feedback
  • Communicate with and support Fellows


Team Management (20%)
  • Manage the Manager of Fellowship in Special Education to oversee Fellows' recruitment, surveys, technological systems, events, and program standing tracking; set goals with team member, support, develop, coach and hold this person accountable for results
  • Coordinate with the Manager of Knowledge and Learning Team Data Systems to track participants program standing and metrics related to team goals.


Knowledge and Learning Team and KIPP DC Ambassadorship (10%)
  • Serve as the representative of the Fellowship externally and with other teams at KIPP DC
  • Lead specialized special education professional development for other network audiences such as current and aspiring school leaders
  • Collaborate with other program leads on the Knowledge and Learning team


Qualifications

REQUIREMENTS:
  • Bachelor's Degree required, advanced degree is a plus
  • Experience in special education teaching and leadership required
  • Expertise in and passion for special education and meeting the needs of all learners
  • Expertise in and experience facilitating to and teaching adults
  • Expertise in and experience coaching adults
  • Experience vision-setting, leading, and managing large programs
  • Commitment to school communities and a customer service oriented perspective
  • Project management organizational skills, with solid attention to detail
  • Commitment to full ownership of excellent outcomes and work products
  • Strong written and communication skills
  • Ability to work one evening a week during the school year

KIPP DC requires all staff to provide proof that they have had all doses of a primary COVID vaccine or obtain approval for exemption for medical or religious reasons before beginning employment. All KIPP DC staff are strongly encouraged to stay up to date on their vaccinations. The CDC currently defines being up to date on the COVID vaccine as having had all doses of a primary vaccine and as having received a booster, if eligible.
