TITLE: Secondary Assistant Principal

REPORTS TO: High School Principal

SUPERVISES: Certified and non-certified personnel servicing in assigned school under the direction of the school principal or designee

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Twelve-month administrative position. Other terms are set by the Board of Education in accordance with the New London Administrators' Education Association contract.

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
This position assists the Campus Principal, and acts in his/her absence. This position supports all aspects of leading and operating the multi-magnet secondary school campus. To provide instructional and curricular leadership that creates, implements, maintains, and evaluates an effective educational program that is built on foundational skills to enhance student achievement. Essential components of the Assistant Principal's responsibility are assistance with implementation of curriculum, supervision and evaluation of staff and students and assisting with the day to day leadership and management of the building.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assists with the overall management of the school including academic (Tier 1, 2 and 3), co-curricular, and support programs in accordance with district policies and procedures.
  • Assists with the promotion of an inclusive and diverse learning culture where every student finds equity, purpose and continually grows academically and emotionally.
  • Assists the Campus Principal with identifying needs, implements appropriate plans, and assesses results in order to develop a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Assists in establishing annual school improvement goals on a clearly defined priority basis, prepares strategies for achieving those goals, and develops criteria for evaluating the accomplishments of the established goals.
  • Assists with managing all building operations, works closely with instructional leaders on curriculum, assists with the creation of schedules, budget development and assignments of staff.
  • Provides support to the Campus Principal related to the annual school budgets.
  • Responsible for expending district funds ethically and in accordance with district and City policies.
  • Develops programs and activities that enhance communication and encourage meaningful involvement by staff, students, parents, and the community in the affairs of the school.
  • Ensures all staff assigned to the building receive an annual performance evaluation, as assigned, under the direction of the Campus Principal, co-supervises the activities of the school's certified and non-certified staff members in the performance of their duties and in the improvement of their performance.
  • Encourages staff to continue to grow professionally and to experiment with new approaches or strategies to teaching.
  • Participates in the recruitment, selection, and recommendation of the school's certified and non-certified staff and in the advancement, transfer, demotion, discipline or severance of these personnel.
  • Assists with the necessary paperwork related to staff recruiting and hiring in collaboration with the Human Resources Department.
  • Assists in developing programs to orient staff to the broad purposes of school, as well as to specific required skills in instructional methodologies and school procedures.
  • Attends meetings of the Board of Education and participates as requested by the Campus Principal of the Secondary Multi-Magnet Campus.
  • Contributes to the development of district-wide policies.
  • Keeps informed on current trends, practices, and research in education by advanced study, by attending conferences, and by other appropriate means.
  • Establishes and maintains favorable relationships with students, parents, and community groups to foster understanding and solicit support for overall objectives and programs.
  • Assists in directing and supervising support services at the individual school level, such as maintenance; security; food services; transportation; extracurricular activities; and library activities.
  • Assists in managing the master schedule to maximize productivity amongst teachers that best algin with the needs of students and academic programming.
  • Encourages parental involvement in students' education and ensures effective communication with student and parents.
  • Assists in operating the school in such a way as to provide the most effective setting for learning possible and takes all reasonable precautions to safeguard the safety, health, and welfare of students and staff members.
  • Collaborates with staff, parents and community partners to strengthen engagement and the overall school community.
  • Assists in developing a program of public relations furthering the community's understanding and support of the school educational program inclusive of all the magnet pathways.
  • Adheres to the Connecticut School Leadership Standards.
  • Leads Title IX work.
  • Supports the established goals articulated in the District's long-term strategic planning.
  • Performs other tasks as assigned by Superintendent/Designee, Executive Director of Magnet Pathways and District Operations, and the Directors of Secondary-Level Curriculum, Instruction, Assessment, Intervention, and Professional Development (6-12).
  • REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Connecticut Intermediate Administration/Supervision Certification (092)
    • Possess a valid Teaching Certificate
    • At least 5 years of successful experience as a classroom teacher
    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Bilingual (English & Spanish)
    • Sixth year, doctorate, or another planned program in educational leadership, ELL, or special education
    • Knowledge of magnet school program development and implementation
    • Knowledge of inquiry-based teaching and learning
    • Demonstrated ability to work with and engage educators, community members, and families from culturally and racially diverse backgrounds.
    • Knowledge of instructional technology that supports teaching and learning.
    • Knowledge of International Education, Arts and/or STEM themes and educational programming
    • Demonstrated leadership abilities in an ethnically diverse community
    • Experience in supervising building-level Special Education and English Learners programs and services

    PERFORMANCE EVALUATION: Evaluated annually by the school Campus Principal of Secondary Multi-Magnet Campus.

    SALARY: $146,758.00
