Job Description
Position Overview
KIPP Philadelphia Public Schools (KPPS) seeks a strong finance/accounting professional who will work at the intersection of accounting, financial operations and strategy to join a growing Finance team as we prepare for the region's next phase of growth and the implementation of our five-year strategic plan - an exciting moment in KPPS history! The Controller will be responsible for ensuring KPPS has the systems, policies, and procedures in place to ensure stewardship of public and private dollars. The Controller will oversee the accounting for $50M+ organization including accounts payables, accounts receivables, fiscal and regulatory compliance, cash management and audit management. The Controller will report to the Managing Director of Finance.

Key Responsibilities
Management and Team Leadership
  • Supervise relationship with outsourced back office provider including scope of work and timely submission of deliverables
  • Manage team's Accounting Manager including setting and supporting achievement of annual goals aligned with organization and team vision, supporting his or her professional development of technical and non-technical skills
  • Cultivate strong relationships across a wide variety of stakeholders including but not limited to regional office leadership, school leadership, and KIPP Family Association leadership
  • Maintain continuous lines of communication and keep MD of Finance informed of all accounting issues
Accounting Leadership
  • Oversee all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring compliance with GAAP and regulatory requirements
  • Maintain a reporting calendar and ensure that reporting deadlines are reviewed and met by the accounting team, including monthly and annual close
  • Oversee a monthly and annual close process. Ensure reconciliations and analysis are completed, including but not limited to:
    • Balance sheet, revenue, and expense account reconciliations
    • Grant and revenue management
    • Ensure that accounts payables are paid in a timely manner
    • Ensure that accounts receivables are collected in a timely manner
    • Ensure that required debt and lease payments are made on a timely basis
    • Maintain the chart of accounts and maintain an orderly electronic accounting and compliance document retention system
  • Oversee all program and grants accounting; ensure that expenditures are consistently aligned with grant and program budgets throughout the grant/fund period
  • Consistent with the organizational priorities, develop, analyze, and make recommendations relating to accounting and financial systems to ensure effective and efficient financial operations
Audit Management and Fiscal Compliance
  • Manage and coordinate the provision of work papers and other information requested by independent external auditors for the five annual audits of that comprise the KIPP Philadelphia network
  • Manage and coordinate the provision of information required so tax return preparers may prepare the annual IRS Form 990 information returns
  • Monitor relevant open regulatory issues that might impact our organizations

Qualifications
• BA/BS degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required. Related graduate degree preferred

• CPA Preferred

• Mastery of Microsoft Office, G-Suite, and Intacct strongly preferred

• Thorough knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Financial Accounting Standards Board required. Knowledge of Governmental Accounting Standards Board strongly preferred

• 8+ years of related professional experience strongly preferred

• At least 2 years of experience in a management role preferred

• Non-profit experience required, K-12 experience preferred.

• Complete all required criminal and child abuse background checks:

o PA State Police Clearance

o PA Child Abuse Clearance

o Cogent Federal Fingerprinting

Compensation
  • Salaries at KPPS are competitive and equitable. The salary range for this position is $100,000- $115,000 commensurate with experience.
