Situated in the heart of Pennsylvania, State College Area School District (6,600 students) is looking for its next superintendent.  State College is a thriving educational community in a university town (Penn State University), and the district draws its students from a 150 square mile attendance area encompassing the Borough of State College and five surrounding boroughs.  A community that holds high expectations for its public schools as evidenced by its consistent recognition statewide and nationally for educational excellence, State College seeks a dynamic, energetic leader who exhibits:

  • Eagerness to commit and embed oneself into the fabric of the State College community, and strengthen and increase lasting collaborative efforts between the community and SCASD;
  • A record of accomplishment in driving the achievement, readiness and success of students;
  • A deep sense of responsibility for developing the social, emotional, physical and intellectual skills of every child;
  • A recognition that diversity, equity and inclusivity are foundational to a world-class public school district;
  • A recognition that sustainability should be incorporated into the educational and operational aspirations of the district;
  • Excitement about community expectations for academic excellence in a high-performing educational environment;
  • Ability and work/life balance to manage the inherent demands of leadership;
  • An empathic, decisive, ethical approach to executing the duties of the office;
  • Advocacy skills to advance a bold agenda for public education amongst legislative leaders and representatives;
  • The interpersonal skills to work collaboratively with colleagues, build cross-functional teams, and minimize group siloes;
  • The intellectual rigor to engage with a broad spectrum of viewpoints, and a willingness to hear respectful dissent, especially in a university town;
  • Strong commitment to clear, consistent, and transparent communication and interpersonal skills with all district stakeholders;
  • An ‘urgently patient’ disposition that displays the confidence to facilitate change with the humility to interact consistently with internal and external stakeholders;
  • The well-developed managerial and operational talent to meet the challenges and competing demands of 21st century public education, including program and budget evaluation, implementing high-impact staff development, and embedding accountability systems within an environment of limited public resources; and,
  • A nimble competence for governance, including role clarification among school leaders; synthesizing information, driving board discussions, and communicating effectively with a diverse group of school directors.
