    Founded in 2004 and named for the first African-American woman to earn her Ph.D. in Mathematics, the award-winning E.L. Haynes Public Charter School serves more than 1,135 students in grades Pre-K3 through 12th grade. E.L. Haynes operates two campuses in the Petworth neighborhood of Northwest Washington, DC, and offers a rigorous educational program designed to prepare students to succeed in the college of their choice.

    We provide a rigorous and engaging curriculum for students in grades Pre-K through 12. Our instructional program provides intensive learning experiences that deepen understanding at all grade levels so that every student is prepared to become kind and curious community members, lifelong learners, and leaders of social justice.

    About the position:

    Extended Day Program (EDP) Lead Teachers serve as the primary teacher for students during our before and after school programming. They design and implement engaging and fun academic learning experiences aligned to our daytime programming. EDP Lead Teaches are part-time E.L. Haynes contractors who work closely with daytime staff in service of our overall school mission and graduate profile.

    Current ELH staff members would begin at 4:00.

    You will:
    • Develop a positive, supportive, productive classroom environment and implement engaging daily activities for all students
    • Lead the development of lesson plans aligned with our daytime academic and social emotional program
    • Prepare learning materials that supplement the standard school day
    • Establish efficient classroom routines and procedures to ensure a safe learning environment
    • Collaborate consistently with colleagues, school administration, and families; share updates with families and staff about student engagement and performance
    • Proactively adhere to policies and procedures, making the safety and care of students the primary focus
    • Demonstrate exceptional organizational, multi-tasking, problem solving and decision making skills; meet assigned deadlines
    • Demonstrate strong verbal, written and interpersonal skills with a focus on customer service; maintain open, professional, and constructive communication with students, colleagues, and families
    • Participate in regular professional learning opportunities to develop and expand skill
    • Communicate and partner with families, sharing regular updates on student learning during extended day programming
    • Complete all necessary Childcare compliance requirements and trainings
    • Perform other duties as assigned
    You have:
    • A belief that all children, from every background, must receive an excellent education, and are able to reach high levels of academic achievement;
    • 48 semester credit hours with 15 semester hours in early childhood education and two years of supervised work experience; or a high school diploma and a current Child Development Associate (CDA) credential;
    • Experience with elementary school-aged children;
    • A commitment to continuing to grow and learn professionally;
    • Demonstrated ability to build strong relationships with students and families from racially, culturally, and socioeconomically diverse backgrounds;
    • Self-motivation and initiative, especially when juggling competing priorities;
    • Ability to build and sustain a positive and supportive academic-focused classroom culture;
    • Proactive and strong written and oral communication skills;
    • Strong attention to detail and exceptional follow-through; and
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
    You might also have:
    • Oral and/or written proficiency in Spanish;
    • An Associates degree related to early childhood education.
