Position Description

TITLE: Family Engagement Specialist CLASSIFICATION: Non-Certified

FLSA: Exempt DEPARTMENT: Parent and Student Services

SALARY: Administrative Salary Scale PG2 WORK YEAR: 260 Days

REPORTS TO: Director of Parent and Student Services

JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Summary: Under the general direction of the Director of Parent and Student Services, the Family Engagement Specialist will work collaboratively with the family and community engagement coordinator, K-12 principals, lead parents, and families to ensure that school programs and family activities support the needs of engaging parents and families in the learning process and social development of students during and after school times.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's Degree in field related to family engagement required
  • Minimum of two years experience working in an educational setting or related field
  • Demonstrated effective experience in building collaborative relationships/partnerships
  • Strong organization and communication skills including excellent time management
  • Experience working with families from low socioeconomic backgrounds
  • Valid Driver's License

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS:

Knowledge of:
  1. Knowledge of and/or experience with case management, professional training and/ or workforce development;
  2. Knowledge of and/or experience in K-12 Education and Family needs of students;
  3. Knowledge of and/or experience in family, community and parent engagement;


Ability to:

  1. Must have high level of organization and the ability to coordinate and organize materials with attention to detail;
  2. Demonstrate effective verbal and written communication;
  3. Maintain confidentiality of privileged and/or sensitive information;

Skills:
  1. Interpersonal skills; collaborative thinking; ability to use tact, patience and courtesy;
  2. Strong problem solving skills.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (Essential Job Functions)

Family Engagement
  1. Regular attendance to perform assigned duties;
  2. Collaborate with Family and Community Engagement Coordinator, principals, lead parents, and families to engage families in the supportive activities that encourage positive school experiences for their children.
  3. Promote and maintain positive family engagement activities through current research of best practices.(i.e. ISBE, national organizations,etc.)
  4. Ensure that all schools maintain a welcoming environment for parents.
  5. Lead development and implementation of parent education and employment opportunities, leveraging internal resources and community partners; solicit family input on family education offerings;
  6. Implement and support activities to ensure a strong connection between home and school, including take-home learning activities;
  7. Engage families in parent advisory committees and other leadership opportunities;
  8. Ensure that families of students with disabilities, and those who speak second languages receive services.
  9. Work with The Family and Community Engagement Coordinator.
  10. Work with Parent Teacher Facilitators to coordinate school family engagement activities.
  11. Implement activities and workshops from the district's parent shared calendar.
  12. Support elementary and secondary schools.
  13. Assist Parent Leaders in developing activities at each school.
  14. Assist Teacher Facilitators in developing activities at each school.
  15. Implement activities and workshops for parent involvement with Parent University and at each school K-12.
  16. Create Monthly Newsletters to communicate activities, data and goals across the district and schools.
  17. Support district theme activities and school hosted workshops at each campus.
  18. Work with schools to schedule school family events and provide a district calendar.
  19. Support district newsfeeds and communication platforms concerning community parent and family support events.
  20. Coordinate/attend district events across schools.
  21. Support schools with obtaining 100% participation in completing the Five Essentials Survey.
  22. Maintain data collection for all district schools and FACE family engagement activities.
  23. Disseminate information regarding upcoming district activities and events at all schools.

Eligibility and Recruitment
  1. Support program efforts to guarantee successful enrollment and school experiences throughout K-12 schools.
  2. Educate families about the importance of school success, learning programs and school attendance.
  3. Strengthen and develop potential partnerships with community entities with access to priority populations;
  4. Maintain positive relationships with volunteers, lead parents, students, parents, and staff.

Attendance
  1. Support communication of district wide attendance goals followed by family engagement support and activities.
  2. Determine strategies needed to support regular attendance, connecting families to resources as needed; educate families about the benefit and importance of regular school attendance;


Comprehensive Services
  1. Support communication of goals and activities related to health and dental compliance across district schools.
  2. Coordinate parent meetings and workshops to educate families in the areas of child health, mental health, and development;
  3. Assist families in establishing a "medical home" and "dental home" for their children to ensure access to consistent health care;
  4. Serve as a Mandated Reporter;

Connection to Resources
  1. Assess family needs and identify parent/guardian goals for families. Work with families to develop a plan towards meeting their needs and achieving goals.
  2. Work with district parents, support staff and school personnel to refer families to resources to support their family plan.
  3. Document referrals and follow-up with families regarding referrals on a regular basis.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Office environment; walking, standing, squatting, listening and speaking to exchange information and make presentations; seeing to monitor various activities; read documents, view computer monitor, kneeling, bending at the waist, sitting for extended periods of time; reaching overhead, above shoulders, and horizontally, or bending at the waist to retrieve and store files; lifting semi heavy objects; driving a vehicle to conduct work, moderate travel.
