Assistant Director of Early Childhood Education [BASAS 11B]

The goal of The Office of Special Education (OSE) is to provide a free and appropriate public education in the least restrictive environment. The Assistant Director of Special Education Early Childhood of Boston Public Schools is a member of the Office of Special Education administrative team and reports to the Executive Director of Special Education. The Assistant Directors will the Early Childhood Special Education in the Boston Public Schools, with a focus overseeing early childhood screening and early childhood state indicators, the transition of students' services from Early Intervention to early childhood classrooms in the Boston Public Schools, and overseeing Early Childhood Special Education Coordinators and Early Childhood Liaisons.

Reports to: Executive Director, Special Education

Responsibilities:
  • Work with the Academics and Office of Multilingual Learners to develop materials, curriculum and programs that will high quality support early childhood education in an inclusive and substantially separate settings;
  • Work with the Assistant Superintendent on planning district wide strategies to expand inclusive opportunities in the District;
  • Organizing and executing child find processes and programming;
  • Overseeing student assignments and placements in BPS early child programs and classrooms;
  • Working with the our enrollment team with student projections;
  • Overseen early childhood special education budget;
  • Apply for, manage, and assess impact of Early Childhood Grant opportunities;
  • Provide professional development to central and school based staff on improving educational practices to build inclusive early childhood education settings;
  • Problem solve with families regarding early childhood special education settings;
  • Partner with other district leaders on implementation of Special Education supports in early childhood, including but not limited to: Manager of Compliance, School Assistant Directors, Executive Director of Early Childhood, Executive Director of EL Instruction, Assistant Directors of Behavioral Health, Related Services, and Medical Services.
  • The Assistant Director performs other related duties as requested by the Executive Director of Special Education.

The Assistant Director supervises:

Early Childhood COSE
Early Childhood Liaisons
Early Childhood Unit Clerks

Qualifications:
  1. Demonstrates an understanding of how to create high quality inclusive early childhood special education programming, using culturally responsive lens and demonstrating the value of families as partners;
  2. At least five (5) years experience teaching or providing early childhood special education services in urban special education or related ?eld;
  3. At least three (3) year of experience in administering district level early childhood special education programs, including creating opportunities for providing services in natural environments with in depth knowledge of the laws and regulations related to IDEA for children who are 3-5 years old;
  4. Master's Degree in a related ?eld;
  5. MA DESE or Board of Registration Licensure in Special Education or Related Field
  6. MA DESE Licensure in Supervision or Administration;
  7. Experience in implementing strategies in early childhood special education in a large urban district;
  8. Demonstrated understanding of knowledge of special education regulations;
  9. Current authorization to work in the United States - Candidates must have such authorization by their ?rst day of employment.

TERMS: 225 works days: BASAS 11B, 12 Months
