Job Description: The Office of Advancement promotes welcoming environments in BPS, builds capacity for authentic engagement and supports effective partnerships among students, families, schools and the community to ensure student readiness and achievement from birth to graduation. As part of the Parent University team, the Family Education Coordinator focuses on building the capacity of both families and schools. Working with families, the Coordinator will equip and empower them to effectively support their child's learning. The Coordinator will work primarily with elementary and middle schools to provide opportunities and interactive activities to engage families directly around the curriculum and student learning. The Family Education Coordinator will develop and deliver parent-focused curricula based on the BPS Learning Standards, including a train-the-trainer curriculum to build the school and community-based organization capacity to deliver similar programming.

The Family Education Coordinator will identify and develop tools to support the capacity building efforts of families and schools to collaborate and connect around student learning and outcomes. The ideal candidate will have a deep knowledge of family and student engagement research, and demonstrated success in the practical application of the research, particularly as it relates to implementing strategies that make the connection between engagement and improved student outcomes. This position will also work in collaboration with BPS Academics Office to ensure alignment with BPS Learning Standards.

Responsibilities:
  1. Promote the BPS vision for family and student engagement within the Boston Public Schools and greater Boston community;
  2. Develop, manage and facilitate innovative approaches to engaging families in children's math and literacy learning at the elementary level; including parent-child approaches to learning;
  3. Work with the team members to develop appropriate family education offerings and strategies for middle and high schools;
  4. Work with Family Education Coordinators to develop and facilitate innovative approaches to engaging families in parent leadership and advocacy classes that support student learning
  5. Work with the BPS Academics Office to develop and teach classes for families based on the BPS Learning Standards using proven principles and methodologies for teaching adult learners;
  6. Develop and deliver ESOL curriculum that integrates family engagement strategies and technology for ELL families;
  7. Lead and support the Parent University Collaborative partners to meet their goals and sustainability plan for the family education work.
  8. Serve as a resource for all Office of Advancement teams, Engagement Facilitators, parent coordinators, teachers, and school staff, to help families understand BPS curriculum;
  9. Lead the development of multi-session professional learning and Train the Trainer model for school-based engagement staff (CFC's, family liaisons, parent coordinators, etc.) to build internal capacity to offer parent workshops related to BPS curriculum;
  10. Identify best practice and high impact strategies that link family and student engagement to learning, and develop tools for both families and schools to support effective implementation of strategies;
  11. Support the development of Parent University offerings focused on building parent capacity to understand the BPS Learning Standards and support learning at home;
  12. Leverage various types of social media (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, webinars, Youtube videos, cable television, etc.) to further learning for all parent populations.
  13. Provide technical assistance to other districts on family engagement strategies.
  14. Perform other related duties as requested by the Director.
Qualifications - Required:
  • Bachelor's degree in education or related field or commensurate experience
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated experience in program design and curriculum development
  • Background in adult education with previous experience teaching adults
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks, projects, and demands, and meet deadlines
  • Ability to work effectively with culturally, linguistically, racially, socioeconomically, and religiously diverse populations and to successfully teach and adapt to all learning styles
  • Demonstrated success working with families from historically marginalized populations
  • Proficiency with MS Office, especially MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Google, and other applicable software
  • Strong organization and planning skills and attention to detail
  • Current authorization to work in the United States - Candidates must have such authorization by their first day of employment
Qualifications - Preferred:
  • Experience working with families in an urban setting
  • Bilingual (Spanish, Haitian Creole, Cape Verdean, Somali, Chinese, or Vietnamese preferred)
  • Experience coordinating and programming a technology center
  • Knowledge of BPS curricula and instructional practices
This position requires flexibility that will include working evenings and weekends.
This position is subject to the City of Boston residency ordinance.

Terms: Managerial, C42. City of Boston Residency is Required.
