The School Dean is responsible for the strategic direction of the School of Education and ensures the relevance and quality of its programs across the College and at each academic level, including bachelor’s and master’s degree programs. The School Dean leads the faculty and staff, develops collaborative relationships with internal constituencies and external partners, and effectively manages the operations of the School.

This role requires current, relevant educational expertise to deliver high quality curricula that meet NYSED and CAEP standards. It also requires educational instructional and leadership experiences aligned with best practices for teachers and school leaders that will shape the present and future of the school. Responsibilities will also include a focus on innovative curriculum design and recruiting that includes a focus on diversity, equity and inclusion and supports the goals of the Teacher Opportunity Corps Grant, of which we are proud recipients.

The School Dean develops and supports faculty expertise in the areas of curriculum design, content delivery, instructional effectiveness, and continuous improvement. The School Dean is responsible for proposing new courses and new program development to ensure that the academic offerings meet the needs of the field, are responsive to regulatory changes at the state and national level, grow student enrollment, and provide enhanced career opportunities for graduates.

Key Elements of the Position and Specific Responsibilities

  • Ensure a high-quality experience for students, faculty, and staff within the School of Education that is aligned with the College’s mission and core values Serve as the primary ambassador and advocate for the School both internally and externally Design programs, develop curricula, evaluate content, assess student learning and faculty effectiveness, and pursue accreditations and other external validations of programmatic quality Collaborate with the Senior Vice President, faculty, and other stakeholders to develop long-term strategic plans and short-term School-wide goals that involve making decisions based on academic, enrollment, and financial considerations Promote a student-centered and inclusive environment, which emphasizes a shared approach to leadership, management, and teaching/learning. Train, advise, and mentor full-time and part-time faculty, and provide opportunities for professional development Develop and maintain positive and long-lasting relationships with educational and community partners, keep abreast of trends and regulatory changes in education, and cultivate an active advisory board Recruit faculty who are content experts and reflect the diversity of the student population and the communities served by the College Proactively and positively resolve issues in a way that serves the best interests of students, faculty and staff Employ the most effective methods for multi-modal delivery of content and hands-on experience/lab-work in an online, face-to-face, blended environment when developing courses/curricula. Establish an innovative and engaging learning environment for students by supporting the integration of new and existing course technologies. Manage current NYSED Teacher Opportunity Corps grant, working collaboratively with the Office of Admissions and school and community partners to recruit and retain talented candidates who are underrepresented in the teaching force and track student outcomes. Design/select appropriate assessments to measure student achievement as required by Council for Educator Preparation (CAEP) and analyze results as part of continuous improvement. Ensure all programs, undergraduate and graduate, in the School of Education, meet accreditation requirements.

  • Experience in management in a professional environment including planning, budgeting, team building, collaborating, problem-solving, project management, and establishing a feedback mechanism to monitor and continuously improve course offerings, degree programs, and the students’ academic experience Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of urban college students, including those with physical or learning disabilities as it relates to differences in learning styles Experience in coaching and mentoring staff and faculty required Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills Ability to lead effectively to achieve team objectives and goals required Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills, proven record of professional accomplishments Ability to interact effectively with subordinates, co-workers, supervisors, and external stakeholders to accomplish program, departmental, and institutional goals

Qualifications

  • Earned doctoral degree in Education from a nationally/regionally accredited college/university Teaching and/or leadership certifications, licenses
  • Minimum of five (5) years teaching experience and academic leadership in a college or university, or 10+ years of leadership experience in education with progressively greater responsibility requirement Expertise in P-12 academics with the skills, competencies, and pedagogical knowledge in instruction, assessment, and meeting the needs of all learners to best lead a teacher training program. Knowledge of NY State assessments required for teacher candidates and ability to support students’ success Working knowledge of regulations and requirements specific to education with deep expertise in some and familiarity in others: Next Generation Standards Literacy, STEM and the arts instruction National accreditation and reporting (eg Title II) NYSED TOC II Grant NY Commissioner’s regulations governing schools and teacher preparation programs Project management regarding data collection and analysis
