Job Summary
The Senior Director of Student Nutrition oversees the daily operations of the Student Nutrition Program and department for the Anchorage School District. The senior director leads and manages the activities of Student Nutrition employees to ensure that nutrition standards and district goals are met for all student meals. The position has a retirement association with the Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS).

Job Requirements
The following are required:
  1. A bachelor's degree or equivalent educational experience with academic major or concentration in food and nutrition, food service management, dietetics, family and consumer sciences, nutrition education, culinary arts, business, or a related field.
  2. Effective communication and leadership skills. Ability and willingness to work and collaborate with district leaders, school principals, and state/local agencies.
  3. Experience managing multi-million dollar operating budgets.
  4. Ability to develop strategic plans, marketing programs, and initiatives to achieve district-level goals.
  5. Knowledge of current technology as it relates to business management and operation of a student nutrition function.

The following are preferred:
  1. A master's degree.
  2. Experience in food management including supervision of a large scale institutional or commercial food operation.
  3. Experience supervising unionized employees.
  4. Knowledge of purchasing, warehousing, supply management, and food service programs.
  5. Experience in a large school system.

Essential Job Functions
  1. Leads and provides visionary direction to the Student Nutrition Department. Is responsible for the productivity, well-being, and professional development of over 300 employees.
  2. Functions as a senior leader in Anchorage School District and a key member of the ASD support services leadership team.
  3. Directs the development and implementation of policies and procedures for the Student Nutrition Department.
  4. Manages the school meal program for the entire district, including menu planning, recommending prices for food, and analyzing trends in school lunch sales and costs.
  5. Participates in the development of the annual budget for the food program. Monitors and controls expenditures accordingly.
  6. Interprets and ensures compliance with federal and state laws relating to the program including surplus commodity regulations and laws concerning sanitation and health.
  7. Directs the orientation and training of food service personnel.
  8. Manages and directs the activities of the employees for the Student Nutrition Department. Makes routine employment decisions by setting goals, monitoring performance, and taking appropriate follow-up actions.
  9. Prepares reports and correspondence relative to food service and ensures the timely submittal of required reports to federal and state authorities.
  10. Establishes and supervises the accounting, record keeping, and reporting procedures related to the operation.
  11. Reviews new facility plans and makes recommendations within food service areas.

Physical/Mental Demands
The physical demands of this job require frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking, and hearing. Specific visual abilities are also required. The employee is regularly required to reach with his/her hands and arms and occasionally lift items weighing less than 40 lbs. Additionally, the employee must be able to communicate by oral and written means in an appropriate business manner and have cognitive skills to understand instructions, readily recall facts and details, handle conflict, and make effective decisions under pressure. The employee must have the ability to effectively manage the stress of working with students, parents, and other employees representing diverse cultures, personalities, and work styles in a dynamic work environment.

Work Environment
Work is performed in a professional environment with a wide variety of individuals having differing functions, personalities and abilities, including working with diverse groups of people in a variety of different settings.

While performing the duties of this job the employee may be regularly exposed to a video display. The employee may be exposed to outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
