Summary of Position:

Provide leadership to all aspects of the District's K-12 Health and Physical Education programming.

This position will be responsible for:

  • Supporting curriculum, instruction, assessment, content integration and professional development for all schools.
  • Identifying and/or leading development of standards-aligned curriculum and assessments.
  • Designing and leading professional development focused on culturally sustaining curriculum and pedagogy in health and physical education.
  • Support school leadership teams and teachers in improving instruction.
  • Support the district's strategic plan and key goals focused on equity, literacy, & social emotional learning within a multi-tiered system of support.

Qualifications:

  • Current Minnesota license in Health
  • Current Minnesota license in Physical Education
  • Advanced degree in education or educational leadership preferred but not required.
  • Leadership experience working with teachers to support curriculum, instruction, and/or assessments.
  • A minimum of five years of classroom teaching experience with evidence of culturally responsive pedagogy, teaching culturally, linguistically, and ethnically diverse students.

  2. Demonstrated commitment to increasing representation of MPS students' cultures in instructional materials and incorporating culturally relevant teaching strategies.
  3. A demonstrated conviction that all students can and will achieve at high levels.
  4. Knowledge of research and best practices in health and physical education instruction, including culturally relevant and sustaining pedagogy, social emotional learning, long-term planning, and disciplinary literacy.
  5. Knowledge of the 2018 Minnesota Academic Standards in Physical Education
  6. Knowledge of the National Health Education Standards
  7. Knowledge of the National Sex Education Standards
  8. Demonstrates courteous and culturally responsive behavior when interacting with students, clients, visitors, and MPS staff; acts in a manner that promotes harmonious and effective workplace environment.
  9. Ability to work collaboratively and creatively with colleagues.
  10. Knowledge of and an ability to utilize a variety of current technological tools and student data platforms for communication, planning, and documentation.
  11. Ability to use formative and summative assessments to guide instruction.
  12. Demonstrated effective leadership and coaching skills in working with adults.
  13. Experience planning, facilitating, and evaluating high-quality professional development.
  14. Experience leading culturally responsive curriculum development and long-term planning with teachers.
  15. Skilled building relationships outside of schools with content experts, non-profits, community groups, and other allies in our work


Position Functions, Duties, Responsibilities:

  1. Facilitate district Health and Physical Education programs
  2. Implement strategies that reduce/eliminate racial disparities in student outcome and course enrollments.
  3. Ensure that strategies for specific students, including English learner support, Special Education services, and advanced learner support are integrated seamlessly into core curriculum and professional development.
  4. Ensure alignment of physical education instructional practices and assessments with the Minnesota Academic Standards.
  5. Lead process of creating/adopting culturally relevant instructional materials which support standards-based teaching and learning and integration of literacy and content.
  6. Facilitate conversations amongst community organizations to gather input in developing, vetting, and revising curricular resources.
  7. Collaborate with District-wide departments (i.e. Equity and Integration, Social Emotional Learning and Student Wellness).
  8. Design and lead professional development on health and physical education curriculum, instruction, and assessment for school leaders and teachers.
  9. Build the capacity of school leadership teams to support continuous improvement in teaching and learning at the site.
  10. Build relationships and collaborate within MPS schools, in addition to content experts, non-profits, community groups, and other allies in our work.
  11. Assume other duties and responsibilities as assigned. There may be times when required to work outside normal business hours and work extended hours to accomplish requirements of the position.
