The Elementary Teacher instructs students at the elementary level in activities designed to promote social, physical, and intellectual growth in subject matters and skills that will enable them to maximize their potential as learners. Creates, organizes and implements meaningful and engaging lessons/instructional programs to diverse groups of students in an elementary learning environment that guides and encourages students to develop and fulfill their academic potential, as well as help them develop their character, personality and social and emotional skills. Promotes enthusiasm for growth and development. Adheres to state curriculum standards. Collects and reports on correct and detailed records of student performance. Creates and maintains a safe and respectful learning environment. Creates a relationship of mutual trust and respect with students from all backgrounds and abilities.

The essential functions of this position include:
  1. Plan, prepare and deliver lesson plans, class activities and a variety of instructional materials that facilitate active and meaningful learning. Develop lesson plans and tests that are in accordance with established expectations.
  2. In harmony with the parameters of the District-adopted curriculum, establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, projects, etc, and communicate these objectives and their purpose to students.
  3. Adapt and reassess lesson plans to meet specific student needs; comply with newly implemented guidelines or rules; and update lesson plans and activities to incorporate best practices and new developments in education.
  4. Meet and instruct assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated.
  5. Assess and record learning on an ongoing basis and adjust instruction based on the assessments.
  6. Refer students with special learning needs to appropriate staff according to district/building/department procedures.
  7. Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.
  8. Assist students in attaining an acceptable level of proficiency in related computer work.
  9. Collaborate with colleagues and participate on EST (education study team) and Special Educators meet the needs of all students, including students with disabilities.
  10. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the student population being served and how demographic variables impact student achievement, and effectively use this knowledge to effectively design and deliver instruction.
  11. Advise parents and/or legal guardians of student progress for the purpose of communicating expectations; student's achievements; developing methods for improvement and/or reinforcing classroom goals in the home environment.
  12. Possess and continually develop working knowledge of state and District curriculum standards and frameworks.
  13. Participate in scheduled in-service days and staff meetings.
  14. Cooperate with and support other faculty and staff in planning instruction and coordinating services for students.
  15. Use discretion in discussing school affairs, recognizing the value of positive school-community relations.
  16. Direct assistant teachers, student teachers, instructional assistants, volunteers and/or student workers for the purpose of providing an effective classroom program and addressing the needs of individual students.
  17. Update all necessary records accurately and completely as required by laws, district policies and school regulations.
  18. Prepare a variety of written materials (e.g. grades, lesson plans following scope and sequence, correspondence with parents and students, examinations and quizzes, attendance, anecdotal records, etc.) for the purpose of documenting student progress and meeting mandated requirements.
  19. Report incidents (e.g. fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse, harassment, bullying, hazing, zero tolerance offenses etc.) for the purpose of maintaining personal safety of students, providing a positive learning environment and adhering to state law and board policies.
  20. Respond to emergency situations for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns and/or direct to appropriate personnel for resolution.

The required qualifications of this position include:
  1. Education:
    1. Minimum Required: Bachelors of Arts or Science Degree
    2. Preferred:
    3. Certification Required: State of Vermont teaching Certification with endorsement in the assigned area.
  2. Experience:
    1. Minimum Required:
      1. Demonstrated competence in instruction and content in the assigned area.
      2. Proficient in computers applications - word processing, spreadsheets, email, internet.
      3. Familiar with laws and regulations governing education in Vermont.
      4. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate and acceptable.
  3. Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities:
    1. Working knowledge: Sufficient familiarity with the subject to know basic principles and terminology and to understand and solve simple problems.
    2. General knowledge: Sufficient knowledge of a field to perform most work in normal situations. The work calls for comprehension of standard situations and includes knowledge of most of the significant aspects of the subject.
    3. Thorough knowledge: Advanced knowledge of the subject matter. The work calls for sufficient comprehension of the subject area to solve unusual as well as common work problems, to be able to advise on technical matters and to serve as a resource on the subject for others in the organization.
    4. Comprehensive knowledge: Requires complete mastery and understanding of the subject. This term should be used sparingly and only for unusually exacting or responsible positions required to originate hypotheses, concepts, or approaches.

SALARY: As per the Master Agreement between the Burlington Board of School Commissioners and the Burlington Education Association.
