Job Summary

Skilled technical work installing, diagnosing, troubleshooting, testing, repairing, upgrading, and retrofitting network copper and fiber optical cabling. This entrance level class is a stand-alone class.

Essential Functions

1.Troubleshoots network copper, fiber optical cabling and network switches connectivity issues. Evaluates problems, formulates solutions and, with appropriate approval, takes corrective actions.

2. Perform site survey for the design and installation of additions and upgrades of network wiring. Maintains accurate drawings, installation records, and test data records. Develops and submits new site surveys and cost analysis for as builds. Designs and oversees installation of new building telecommunication rooms.

3. Identifies appropriate techniques and procedures for cable and equipment installation, maintenance, monitoring and performance improvement. Installs, terminates and certifies fiber optical cabling and copper cabling. Pulls Cat 6A cabling.

4. Documents test results and forwards to appropriate personnel.

5. Performs fire stopping of floors and walls for new and existing cabling.

6. Locates and identifies existing wiring for network use. Performs retrofit of network wiring and removal of abandoned wiring

7.Prepares station locations (wall outlets).

8. Prepares and maintains documentation concerning service requests, parts and supplies used, maintenance scheduling, and recommendations for cabling/wiring replacement. Inventories and orders materials and supplies.

9. Researches solutions to network cabling/wiring issues as needed, to include communicating with appropriate personnel and/or external vendors concerning equipment, product information, and end user technical support ; performs follow up to ensure issues are resolved.

10. Transports cable, equipment and materials to and from assigned work sites.

11. Performs other duties as assigned.

Probation: Six (6) months

Qualifications

Open Requirements:

Three (3) year combination of education, training and experience in installing, diagnosing, troubleshooting, testing, repairing, upgrading, and retrofitting the network copper and fiber optical cabling. Ability to distinguish colors

Successful completion of a post-high school network cabling certification, such as by BICSI, may substitute for up to two (2) years of the required experience. Such substitution is dependent upon the complexity and currency of training received to performance of essential functions.

Licensing: A valid Florida Driver's License is required prior to appointment and must be maintained during employment in this class.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of technological developments in network cabling equipment, installation techniques, construction standards and test procedures
  • Knowledge of the principles, concepts and practices in the installing, diagnosing, troubleshooting, testing, repairing upgrading, and retrofitting the District's network copper and fiber optical cabling
  • Knowledge of network design, codes, standards, components, and topologies
  • Knowledge of network cabling systems, practices, placement, conduit design, lateral design and building entrance design
  • Knowledge of network cabling interface requirements with network equipment
  • Knowledge of different network topologies and the application of these network topologies
  • Knowledge of industry standards, regulations and safety procedure
  • Strong skills in the use of monitoring, diagnostic, and installation equipment and tools for copper and fiber optical cabling
  • Strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Strong word processing and database software skills
  • Strong math skills in addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, decimals, percentages, and use of algebraic and geometric principles
  • Ability to read, understand, analyze, and apply technical data, manuals, schematics, and related specifications
  • Ability to complete forms, prepare reports and draw schematics regarding work performed
  • Ability to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form
  • Ability to provide guidance, assistance, and/or interpretation to others on how to apply procedures and standards to specific situations
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objectives
  • Ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity required in situations involving evaluation of information against measurable or verifiable criteria
  • Ability to learn configuration/programming of routers, switches and other complex network equipment
  • Ability to learn and apply new technology knowledge to assigned work
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • Ability to provide accurate labeling and records of cables, equipment and work area
