The School Counselor is a professional educator with special training in school counseling and college guidance who works with full-time students and their families to help ensure they are adequately planning and preparing for college and career choices well-suited to their interests and aptitudes. They also assist families with concerns about behavioral and developmental issues and services in the role of mandatory reporter for issues that are meet the criteria for mandatory reporting. The School Counselor provides proactive leadership that engages all stakeholders in the delivery of programs and services to help students achieve success in school and beyond.

Essential Functions, duties and responsibilities: The below statements are intended to describe the general nature and scope of work being performed by this position. This is not a complete listing of all responsibilities, duties and/or skills required; other duties may be assigned.   • Educates students and parents about colleges, the college admissions process, trends, procedures, and testing; makes informational presentations to parents; maintains information on colleges, college guides, scholarships, financial aid, and paying for college;
  • Provides academic counseling as needed, including recommendations on Advanced Placement (AP) and technical courses, to challenge and enrich student learning opportunities;
  • Advises and supports seniors and their families as they go through the college/career process; helps students and their families aspire realistically and choose wisely in setting goals; provides curricular guidance; explores individual college/career choices; teaches a life skills/college prep class;
  • Maintains and helps students use online college and career planning resources, e.g. Naviance Family Connection Website; other resources as identified.
  • Works with students, families, teachers and other school personnel to proactively address social, behavioral and personal problems through monthly online sessions, with an emphasis on preventative and developmental counseling that enhances the student's overall growth and provides them with important life skills;
  • Responds to requests for support from parents or students with developmental guidance issues, referring them to local resources as needed, and ensuring that any and all mandatory reporting requirements are met;
  • Meets virtually with college admissions representatives; facilitates meetings between college representatives and students; also serves as a liaison with college admissions offices throughout the year;
  • Writes an official school recommendation for each senior as requested, gathering information from parents, teachers, school records, and students themselves; also completes all School Report and mid-year report forms requested by colleges, including evaluations of students;
  • Maintains and disseminates information about standardized tests such as the SAT, ACT, and TOEFL
  • Compiles an annual profile of the school to be utilized in the college admissions process, tracks admissions decisions and statistics and reports to stakeholders appropriately; assists in interpreting data and implementing growth and improvement plans;
  • Maintains awareness of issues and trends in college admission, higher education and testing and conveys appropriately to students and their families; monitors changes in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) course work requirements and communicates such changes to student-athletes; keeps up-to-date about specific colleges and maintains membership in professional organizations, e.g. the College Board, the National Association of College Admission Counselors, American School Counselors Association, etc.;
  • Works with the Registrar to maintain records on seniors, including GPA's and transcripts;
  • Participates as a part of the administrative team, contributing to enhancing the school/college counseling and overall guidance program.

Minimum Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree AND
  • Minimum of 3 years' experience as a School Counselor, with documentation of college acceptance outcomes and experience.
  • Equivalent education or experience that documents readiness for success in this role.

Certificates and Licenses: None required;

OTHER REQUIRED SKILLS & ABILITIES:
  • Ability to pass required background checks.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Online learning experience
  • State-level certification as a School Counselor for grades 6-12
  • Experience working with Naviance

Ability to compose materials such as detailed reports, work-related manuals, publications of limited scope or impact, etc.
  • Mathematics: Ability to compute, analyze, and interpret numerical data for reporting and forecasting purpose

Compensation & Benefits: Stride, Inc. considers a person's education, experience, and qualifications, as well as the position's work location, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value when determining a new employee's salary level. Salaries will differ based on these factors, the position's level and expected contribution, and the employee's benefits elections. Offers will typically be in the bottom half of the range.
  • This position is Exempt (salary): We anticipate the salary range to be $24,000 to $60,000. Eligible employees may receive a bonus. This salary is not guaranteed, as an individual's compensation can vary based on several factors. These factors include, but are not limited to, geographic location, experience, training, education, and local market conditions. Stride offers a robust benefits package for eligible employees that can include health benefits, retirement contributions, and paid time off.
