This vacancy is the result of temporary funding through the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund (ESSER). The duration of the funding means the position is temporary and may last for one, two, or three years. Hired candidates may be excessed or non-renewed from the position for the following school year.

Reports To: Director of Applications, BPS Technology

The Boston Public Schools seeks a Data Platform Engineer to maintain and optimize data pipelines for BPS Technology. You will be a key member of the Application Development team within BPS Technology and deliver great support to the team. Over the past years, the Office of Data and Accountability and BPS Technology have worked collaboratively to implement the Ed-Fi data standard with support from the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation. The work of this position will directly support the departments' collaborative work in implementing the Ed-Fi data standard, including the preparation and publishing of data from SIS and various data sources, as well as providing support in managing data quality and standardization to the Ed-Fi standard.

Key responsibilities:
Manage various data pipelines between data systems, including preparation, publishing and monitoring data quality
  • Learn the ins and outs of Ed-Fi data standards and API, and how to best use them in BPS environment
  • Serve as the technical subject matter expert on data integration, data processing, and data models across various systems within BPS
  • Identify ways to improve data reliability, efficiency and quality
  • Liaise with the Data Quality Analyst in the Office of Data and Accountability to identify and troubleshoot data quality issues in a timely manner, ensuring minimal disruption to the end-user
  • Assemble large, complex sets of data that meet non-functional and functional business requirements
  • Identify, design and implement internal process improvements including re-designing infrastructure for greater scalability, optimizing data delivery, and automating manual processes
  • Build and monitor required infrastructure for optimal extraction, transformation and loading of data from various data sources and SQL technologies
  • Collaborate with other members of the Application Development team to solve problems and troubleshoot issues as they arise
QUALIFICATIONS - REQUIRED:
  • Bachelor's degree in a related technology field or equivalent 4+ years of relevant experience.
  • 2+ years of experience with SQL
  • Experience in optimizing queries and tuning database performance
  • Coding skills in a number of different languages, including TSQL, .Net, java and javascript, PowerShell scripting a plus
  • 2+ years of experience with APIs and publishing
  • Solid understanding of Scrum and agile principles
  • Experience with Git and GitHub. RedGate experience a plus
  • Fast learner, self-starter
  • Understands business value, context and priorities of the team's work
  • Collaborates in scoping, solution design and evaluation
  • Be proactive in troubleshooting issues - find problems before others do
  • Attention to detail - All downstream work is only as good as the quality and integrity of the data you're moving through the pipeline
  • Appreciation for clean design - You should appreciate the elegance of clean and simple designs that are not over-architected
  • Good communication skills - You'll have to talk to people from other departments to understand the playing field before you design anything and you should find satisfaction in helping colleagues solve problems
  • Excitement about working on back-end systems - You have to take pride in being the hero behind the scenes
  • A love of learning - Things change fast and you need to be able to quickly understand, evaluate, and learn new tools if necessary
  • Be dependable - more reliable than spontaneous
  • Adaptable/flexible - enjoys doing work that requires frequent shifts in direction
  • An agile attitude; familiarity with delivery within an agile framework
  • Current authorization to work in the United States - Candidates must have such authorization by their first day of employment
  • Understand and use standard development environment practices and procedures.
QUALIFICATIONS - PREFERRED:
  • Experience working in public schools, preferably in a large urban setting
  • Experience with PowerBi administration, gateway and datasets
  • Knowledge of Ed-Fi Data Standard
  • Experience with applying data standards to existing data sources
  • Experience with Follett Aspen SIS

TERMS:
This position is subject to the City of Boston residency requirement.

NOTE: School-based managerial employees will work 223 days between July 1st and June 30th each year. The 223 day work-year will include the 180 days in which school is in session, and the additional days will be determined by the employee and the principal or headmaster of the school. This position subject to the City of Boston residency requirement.

School-based managerial employees are not eligible for vacation time or compensatory time. In the event of school cancellation due to snow or inclement weather, school-based managerial employees need not report to work.
