About UP Education Network
UP Education Network manages and operates six schools in Boston, Lawrence, and Springfield, MA. We serve over 3,000 elementary and middle school students. UP is invited by local school districts to restart chronically underperforming district schools as UP Academies. Each UP Academy shares the same mission: to ensure that students acquire the knowledge, skills, and strength of character necessary to succeed on the path to college and to achieve their full potential.

Role
The Special Education Coordinator is responsible for ensuring the Special Education Program at UP Academy is compliant with state and federal Special Education laws. The Special Education Coordinator will report to the Dean of Student Support or Principal of UP Academy, and work closely with UP Education Network's Director of Special Education.

Specific Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with the Principal, Leadership Team, teachers and related service providers, to manage activities relating to compliance with all state and federal special education regulations and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act
  • Provide expertise and assistance regarding the implementation of state and federal Special Education laws for students with disabilities
  • Collaborate with the Principal and Leadership Team in providing FAPE, LRE, and specialized instruction and services for students with disabilities, and differentiated instruction for all students
  • Coordinate and support the continuum of settings and array of services for students with disabilities and students placed-at-risk
  • Manage the Special Education Dashboard Database and other network-driven information databases
  • Serve as liaison to and coordinate the work of outside agencies providing services to students in UP Education Network schools
  • Engage families as partners in planning, problem solving, and aid with school assignments
  • Consult with and support special education teachers and related service providers in their responsibilities to chair annual reviews and develop IEPs for these students
  • Participate in dispute resolution meetings, hearings and mediation settlement meetings as needed
  • Manage Medicaid reimbursement

Qualifications
  • A strong belief in UP Education Network's core values: Students, Community, Humility, Resilience, and Humor
  • Bachelor's degree is required, Master's degree is preferred
  • A valid Massachusetts Teaching License in Moderate Disabilities, k1 - 8, and SEI endorsement for the appropriate grade level
  • Current authorization to work in the United States - A candidate must have such authorization by his or her first day of employment

UP Academy follows the salary scales and salary placement policies of each UP Academy's host school district or state turnaround plan; please see the relevant union's collective bargaining agreement for additional details.
