PAJARO VALLEY UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT POSITION DESCRIPTION

Position: Assistant Principal-High School

Department: Instruction FLSA: Exempt

Reports To: Principal

SUMMARY

Assists the Principal in planning and management of a large high school site. Ensures a safe, orderly and positive environment that meets the needs of students and staff. Participates in the leadership of certificated and classified staff, budget administration, education, and categorical program management. Ensures maintenance and upkeep of school site to promote a safe learning environment. Provides administrative support to the Principal.

NATURE AND SCOPE

Under direction, carries out wide range of supervisory, administrative, and professional duties to support a school site Principal in accomplishing educational objectives. While day-to-day activities may be somewhat recurring, the incumbent exercises a wide degree of latitude in program implementation, supervisory duties, and facility maintenance. Challenges often require significant levels of judgment to consider and balance policies and procedures with social and personal information. Human relations responsibilities include counseling/advising, conflict resolution, conveying policies to uninformed persons, and formal speaking. Interactions cover a range of internal and external contacts that include parents, students, District staff, and, on a lesser basis, community agencies. Work is performed in an office and classroom environment.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is a first-line management position requiring specialized knowledge in education and administration. Advancement to this position requires teacher credentials and administrative certificate. Advancement to Principal requires a minimum of three years additional experience as Assistant Principal and a demonstrated ability to integrate all school activities and staff.

ESSENTIAL TYPES OF DUTIES (Examples)

• Communicates and implements student behavior codes based on District and school guidelines. Orients students and parents to positive and negative behaviors and consequences.

• Participates in the establishment of, and implements programs designed for involving youth, parents, and the community in learning programs.

• Ensures a positive school climate by fostering an environment of cooperation, mutual respect, courtesy, and personal responsibility among students and staff.

• Promotes student relationships by interacting with students and staff before and after school, within student activities, lunches and breaks.

• Promotes student/parent relationships by interacting at student events in evenings and on weekends.

• Collects, analyzes and distributes student data to authorized personnel as required.

• Processes discipline referrals. Confers with staff during in-service training and committee meetings, consults with principal and acts as a liaison with outside agencies and personnel such as law enforcement. Reviews student records and written standards of behavior.

• Promotes/facilitates communication and outreach with a variety of service providers and funding sources to address multiple needs of students and families.

• Attends and participates in a variety of District and school committees. May keep minutes or other records and initiate follow-up as necessary.

• Maintains equipment and facilities and initiates necessary repairs. Processes and stores work orders. Insures compliance with procedures and initiates facility inspections.

• Administers State and District assessments, CBEDS, and mandated standardized testing. Consults with teachers and staff regarding student assessment records.

• Supervises and evaluates classified and certificated staff. Insures District policies and evaluation time lines are met.

• Performs other duties as required to accomplish the objectives of the position.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge and Skills: Professional specialization in principles and practices of California education school management, thorough knowledge of curriculum and instruction, budget practices, supervisory techniques, facility management and regulation, policies and procedures related to education. Organization and management practices as applied to the analysis and evaluation of programs, policies and operational needs. Thorough knowledge of student behavior and discipline, supervision, training and performance evaluation. Knowledge and understanding of pertinent Federal, State and local laws, codes and regulations.

Abilities: Plan, organize, direct and coordinate the work of certificated and classified staff at a school site. Assists in the selection, supervision, training and evaluation of staff. Identify and respond to issues, concerns and needs of students, parents and staff. Develop, implement and administer goals as outlined by the District and school. Assists with budget administration. Monitors equipment purchases, maintenance and repairs. Communicates with District and site administrators, staff, students and parents. Reviews and prepares clear and concise reports. Interpret and apply, Federal, State and local policies, procedures, laws and regulations.

Physical Abilities: Requires sufficient visual acuity to recognize words and letters, ambulatory ability to conduct visitations at various locations within the facility, speech and hearing ability to carry on conversations both in person (formal speaking and informal discussions) and on the phone.

Education and/or Experience: Requires Bachelors degree or equivalent from an accredited college or university with major course work in education. Also requires California teaching and administrative credentials. Must have a minimum of 3 years experience teaching in a high school, including increasing responsibility in administrative and counseling capacities.

Licenses and Certificates: Requires a valid California Driver's License.

Masters Degree Preferred

Five (5) years of successful teaching experiences with increasing responsibilities and demonstrated leadership.

Also requires California teaching and administrative credentials. Must have a minimum of 3 years experience teaching in a high school, including increasing responsibility in administrative and counseling capacities.
