This position is a 1.0 FTE (.5 @ Mill Creek Middle; .4 @ Meridian Middle & .1 Travel) Leave Replacement for the 2022-2023 SY.

Mill Creek Middle School, located in the heart of the Kent valley, serves a diverse population of approximately 850 students in the 7 th and 8 th grades. The campus offers a wide range of academic and extra-curricular activities in a state-of-the-art, technology-rich facility. Rigorous instruction is provided at all levels of the curriculum. English Language Learners and special education students receive needed support services. We have a one-to-one technology environment where every student has a laptop, providing anytime, anywhere learning. The Mill Creek staff is an outstanding group of professionals who strive to meet the unique needs of our students and their families.

Meridian Middle School is a culturally diverse school of 600 students located on the east hill of Kent, WA, 18 miles southeast of Seattle. In addition to the general curriculum, we offer a variety of elective and special education programs. Our school has a technologically literate staff with a major focus on technology integration. Meridian is a One-to-One school with each student and teacher and para are issued a district laptop. We maintain high academic standards, enjoy excellent parent support and offer a number of extra-curricular activities including athletics and clubs. Meridian is a great place to teach and learn!

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: This position is part of the KEA bargaining unit.

ASSIGNMENT: This position will be responsible for teaching band to Middle School students. Candidate will direct school and district/service area performances and festivals, and teach the district curriculum.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Appropriate Washington State certification required and must be on file prior to beginning work.
  2. Major in instrumental music is preferred.
  3. A master's degree in music is preferred.
  4. ELL endorsement preferred
  5. Experience working with a diverse student population and the specific school demographics preferred
  6. Ability to exhibit multicultural and ethnic understanding and sensitivity with the ability to communicate effectively with all cultural groups in the school community.
  7. Candidate must have the ability to maintain and continue a tradition of instrumental music excellence.
  8. The ability to demonstrate proper techniques on a variety of instruments is required.
  9. Candidate must have a proven commitment to an exemplary instrumental music program, enthusiasm and skills necessary to maintain and continue to improve a high level instrumental program.
  10. Ability and willingness to recruit and encourage participation from students from diverse backgrounds and levels.
  11. Must maintain positive learning environment and have ability to relate to all students, parents, and colleagues.
  12. Experience working with high school students preferred.
  13. Desired teacher characteristics are: flexibility; ability to organize ideas, time and materials to accomplish goals; enthusiasm; ability to express ideas clearly and understand concepts being discussed; ability to learn new ideas and skills; ability and willingness to develop favorable relationships with students; knowledge of current approaches to teaching; and willingness to model behavior deemed appropriate by the school district and the community.
