Job Summary:

  1. The lead teacher must demonstrate competency to:

Job Specifications:
  1. Building/Classroom
  1. Responsible for the care and education of children; must be present and engaged during classroom hours.
  2. Demonstrates knowledge in child development and early childhood education; able to plan and implement a comprehensive child development program.
  3. Can effectively communicate the philosophy of the center and its programming, including the importance of learning through play and embracing the role of parent as the primary educator.
  4. Write developmentally appropriate lesson plans, both group and individualized, that incorporate all areas of learning (social-emotional, physical, language, cognitive, literacy, mathematics). Integrate educational aspects of health, nutrition, and mental health services into program activities.
  5. Create and maintain a safe, healthy and developmentally appropriate indoor and outdoor environment that is arranged to promote independence, foster decision-making, and encourage engagement.
  • Responsible for appropriate use of space, equipment and material storage.
  • Regular monitoring, rotation and modification of centers and environment based on student need.
  • Responsible for keeping classrooms, storage areas and office space neat and clutter free.
  • Responsible for maintaining and replenishing inventory of supplies.
  • Responsible for following all health and safety policies and procedures established by the program.
  • Responsible at all times for the direct supervision and safety of all children.
  • Responsible for reporting suspected child abuse in accordance with Washington State Law following program procedures.
  1. Create a pleasant, inviting and comfortable atmosphere that supports the diverse cultural backgrounds of children and families. Classroom signage will be posted in English and Spanish.
  2. Provide a consistent and balanced daily schedule of child initiated and adult directed activities, including individual and small group activities.
  3. Be flexible and comfortable with unexpected change; utilize opportunities for emergent learning.
  4. Be developmentally and linguistically appropriate. Recognize that children have varying rates of growth, as well as individual interests, temperaments, languages, cultural backgrounds, and learning styles.
  5. Be familiar with and implement child assessment tools that are adopted for use in the center or as directed by the Department of Early Learning, including ASQ and DIAL.
  6. Implement any required IEP goals as instructed by special education staff.
  7. Orient, plan, lead and delegate responsibilities to others working in the classroom including assistant teachers, parent and family members, students and community volunteers.
  8. Be able to take directions from the ELC director and any additional supervisors assigned to the classroom, including teachers (certificated and classified).

Additional Job Information : Parent Support
1. Teachers must meet with ECEAP families for a minimum of three, 30 minute, face to face conferences per academic year. Other conferences may be scheduled to meet the needs of the child.
2. Establish friendly, cooperative relationships with parents and families that encourage participation in the classroom and program activities, and that are supportive of parents in their role as their child?s first teacher.
3. Make every effort to communicate with families in their home language. Be diligent and comfortable using a variety of communication modalities, including the use of an interpreter.
4. Assist parents with transition activities (preschool to kindergarten and other elementary school special programs) in an effort to promote continued involvement of parents in the education and development of their children as they move to elementary school.
5. Participate in family programs, events and activities associated with the ELC.

C. Professional Development
1. Complete a staff development plan each year with the assistance of the Director.
2. Demonstrate willingness to engage in reflective practice, continuing education and professional development efforts as available and as requested by the Director, including but not limited to, fall orientation, staff and teacher meetings, early release training days, all staff work days, mandatory DEL trainings.
3. Lead teachers will meet with the Early Achievers coach, at minimum, one time per month.

D. Evaluation
Paraprofessionals will be evaluated by the Director at a minimum of one time per year. Written evaluations will be reviewed with the employee orally and in private. Each employee will receive a copy of the evaluation and will have the right to provide a written response to an unfavorable evaluation, which will be attached to the original document and placed in the employee?s file. Evaluations will be based on job performance as listed in this document.

E. Other
1. Assist with other duties as defined by the Director when additional work is necessary to fulfill the obligations of the center.
2. Responsible for completion of assignments and reporting requirements to a high standard of accuracy, attention to detail, and timely completion of work.
3. Comfortable using computers, tablets, smart phones and other technological devices and programs necessary to complete data collection, documentation and communication requirements.
4. Maintains organization in the work environment and in the tasks they are required to complete.
5. Arrives at work on time; punctually attends and actively participates in all required program activities.
6. Maintains high levels of professional boundaries and confidentiality. Respects the confidentiality of enrolled children and families, personnel issues and program operations. Discusses concerns directly and openly with appropriate staff only.
7. Qualifications : MIMINUM QUALIFICATIONS
AA Degree or higher with the equivalent of 30 college quarter credits in early childhood education. These 30 credits may be included in the degree or in addition to the degree OR
A valid Washington State Teaching Certificate with an endorsement in Early Childhood Education (Pre-K-Grade 3) or Early Childhood Special Education

If the best candidate for the position is not fully qualified, the newly hired staff person must be on a Professional Development Plan (PDP) to fully meet the qualifications of their role within five years from the date of hire. Progress monitoring will occur to ensure staff make yearly progress to meet the required qualifications.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Bi-lingual preferred.
Previous experience in the field of early childhood.
