Special Education High Needs Paraeducator Job Description

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

This position could include but not be limited to the following duties:
  • Perform all academic functions in basic areas of instruction and assist students in those areas
  • Become familiar with classroom terminology
  • Working knowledge of available materials and their use to assist in planning individual programs
  • Provide supplementary support of the skills taught in the child's classroom using drill and additional practice
  • Maintain discipline in instructional or unstructured (playground, cafeteria) areas
  • Implement behavioral programs in a calm and consistent manner, in a class, group or individual setting, especially with students who have challenging behaviors
  • Reinforce and maintain instruction as directed by the teacher
  • Clerical duties as required for the general instruction program and/or special education program
  • Awareness of the programs and objectives of the teacher, student and curriculum in those areas assigned
  • Gather such materials for the continuation of the school program as needed by the teacher
  • Uphold the confidential nature of matters concerning students, teachers, and the school
  • Assist in adaptive physical program or therapeutics as directed and/or physical education classes as needed
  • Meet the physical needs of the student (could include personal hygiene issues, self-help issues, and may require lifting)
  • Mark/score tests and correct pupil work, at times administer selective tests
  • Type and/or reproduce materials
  • Distribute and account for materials and equipment
  • Maintain a neat and orderly station environment
  • Attend training sessions for professional development
  • Monitor classroom when requested by building principal
  • Maintain neat and clean personal appearance
  • Demonstrate a willingness to receive and follow directions
  • Maintain personable and friendly relations between themselves and other faculty members
  • Other duties as assigned
Essential Functions:
  • Must have regular attendance
  • Must be comfortable with using technology and being trained on the use of technology. Including, but not limited to, Gmail, Google Office Suites (Docs, Sheets, Slides), Google Classroom, Odysseyware, Edgenuity and Zoom
  • Must be comfortable assisting students with technology needs
  • Must demonstrate good judgment and common sense
  • Must demonstrate courtesy and tact when dealing with students, staff and patrons
  • Must be capable of standing/walking/ stooping/ bending without restrictions
  • Must have the ability to reach, grasp, handle and grip without difficulty on a continuous basis
  • Must be able to lift 20 lbs. without assistance and up to 100 lbs. with additional adult assistance
  • Rare to occasional pushing and pulling depending on work assignment
  • Must have the ability to get along with students, staff and public
  • Possess the ability to train and provide inservice to substitute employees
  • Implement specially designed instruction and related services and document student performance
  • Maintain a positive relationship with students with challenging behaviors while consistently implementing the behavior plan and consequences
  • Be aware of the requirements of confidentiality for educational and medical records
  • Be aware of health, safety and emergency procedures of the school district

Salary Rate Range : $20.60 - $24.77 per hour

Additional Job Information : Working/Environmental Conditions:

Educational Assistants are exposed to some outside climatic conditions during the winter and summer months. Noise level is considered moderate to low because children are present. The above conditions are not to a degree or length of time to cause marked discomfort or possible bodily injury to the employee.

Benefits: State allowance towards Retirement and Medical insurance. Dental and Vision insurance included. Ten days sick leave per year. Three personal leave days per year.

Qualifications : Minimum Qualifications:

NOTE: Please pay careful attention to qualifications 3,4, and 5.

1. High school diploma or GED equivalent

2. MUST meet at least ONE of the following three options: A. Completed two years of study at an institution of higher education.
B. Obtained an associate's (or higher) degree or: C. Met a rigorous standard of quality and be able to demonstrate, through a formal state or local academic assessment, (1) knowledge of and the ability to assist instructing reading, writing, and mathematics, and (2), as appropriate, reading readiness, writing readiness, and mathematics readiness.

3. Successful experience in implementing Reading Interventions curricula: Read Naturally, Phonics for Reading, Rewards.

4. Must be physically capable (size and strength) of assisting the other adult if the students become aggressive.

5. Training in restraint, crisis management, de-escalation, playground management are preferred. (Note: Restraint is not a part of the treatment plan for these students and would only be used if people were in immanent danger.)

6. Preferably previous experience in working with and/or defusing crisis situations.

7. Proof of citizenship (driver's license, birth certificate, social security card, passport, etc.)

8. First aid and CPR certification

9. Background check

10. Type II driving permit (willingness to get one if required for the job)

11. Good organizational and communication skills. Clerical abilities, computer knowledge, ability to work independently.

12. Proof of Covid-19 vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption
