POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Manager of Safety Operations will be based at the High School and will be responsible for supporting the campus across a range of school operations, with a focus on serving as the lead for safety and security. The Manager of Safety Operations will coordinate extracurricular activities and events held after regular school hours and over the weekend. This position works a swing schedule Monday through Friday (11 am-8 pm) and a minimum of 2 Saturdays monthly. This position oversees the safety procedures, practices, and security personnel at the high school to ensure that all daily procedures, extracurricular activities, and events held on the campus are logistically sound and safe. The Manager of Safety Operations works closely with the Campus Director of HS Operations, School Leader, and Regional Director of Safety Planning to create and sustain safety policies and systems that support the schools' mission and culture of achievement. The Manager of Safety Operations is an exempt position and will report to the Campus Director of HS Operations.

Job Description

Essential Responsibilities

Be a valued member of the school community
  • Understand and internalize the climate and culture of the school
  • Build, improve and maintain effective relationships with students, staff, and stakeholders
  • Manage the development and implementation of school safety goals, objectives, and priorities
  • Support with meetings of key staff, students, and families to identify and resolve problems
  • Direct, support, and implement change at the direction of the school leader
  • Attend and participate in professional group meetings

Respond and support the campus and community when a crisis or emergency occurs, both in the moment and after
  • Be the campus lead on any escalated security issues or emergency situation on or near campus (e.g., gunshots nearby, contraband, student altercation, etc.)
    • Respond appropriately in the moment by activating resources and coordinating on campus and with HDQ (as needed)
    • Respond to police and/or fire emergencies or community disasters on school property
    • Ensure the appropriate communication is facilitated in the moment
    • Coordinate assigned activities with those of other departments and outside agencies and organizations
    • Communicate and coordinate with MPD and other law enforcement (as needed)
  • Prepare and present after-the-fact staff reports and other necessary correspondence, coordinating with the school team and HDQ (as needed), which could include
    • Student safety plans (in coordination with multiple other groups)
    • Changes to operating plans such as bus routes, dismissal times, bell schedules, etc. (in coordination with multiple other groups)
    • Legal review and follow up (in coordination with multiple other groups)
    • Pulling and reviewing camera footage
  • Serve as your school's representative to committees, other school networks, and community stakeholders concerned with improvements in Local Law Enforcement and fire services, public education, and departmental public relations

Support the campus and community with important but non-emergency procedures and training
  • Be the campus lead on daily dismissal procedures, including staff and contractor posts, coordination and communication across academic and operations teams, and overall effectiveness
  • Support with coordination and execution of special event walkthroughs and planning
  • Be the campus lead on after school and sporting safety and security, including but not limited to security oversight, general event logistics, event set-up and break-down, being on site for high priority events
  • Train and support staff, students, and families on safety and security protocols and procedures
  • Facilitate routine fire and lockdown drills, serving as the incident commander for the campus. Ensure the fidelity of the safety drills and support the leadership team in making necessary course corrections
  • Coordinate and manage the school security team to ensure appropriate supervision and safety of students during and after school
  • Create and implement any necessary school safety procedures to maintain a safe environment for our students and faculty
  • Manage all camera platforms, weapons abatement equipment,alarm/intrusion monitoring systems, and radio inventory
  • Maintain the facility access fob database to ensure appropriate campus access
  • Manage all logistics of security coordination and student transportation regarding Safe Passage
  • Engage MPD and community partners as necessary
  • Serve as the Operations team point of contact for campus and community events hosted at the high school
    • Work with Campus Director of HS Operations to review event requests
    • Support the coordination of the master campus event calendar
    • Provide support with planning out the logistical needs and execution of events
  • Other duties as required by the school leader

Audit safety protocols and structures on campus and ensure the campus is positioned appropriately
  • Ensure all required reporting and contract compliance requirements are met, in coordination with the Operations and Legal teams
  • Reconcile security logs against shift responsibilities and patrols; review incident reports prior to submitting to Regional Director of Safety Planning


Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
  • Unquestioned commitment to KIPP DC's missions and values
  • College degree in Business Administration/Criminal Justice or 4 years of relevant experience
  • At least 3 years of business management/operations/supervisory experience
  • Must have a flexible schedule including Saturdays
  • Previous contract security, facilities management, military or law enforcement experience preferred
  • Proficient with Microsoft Suite including excel, word, and powerpoint. Proficient in Google Workplace.
  • Excellent communication skills; written, verbal and presentation
  • Ability to work in a team-oriented management environment with the ability to work independently
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, complex situations, a diverse team of employees and client requirements on an ongoing basis
  • A sense of urgency and ability to proactively and effectively prioritize multiple high-impact tasks
  • Ability to identify inefficiencies and generate creative solutions
