PAJARO VALLEY UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT POSITION DESCRIPTION

Position: Principal, Alternative Education

Department: Instruction

Reports To: Assistant Superintendent

SUMMARY

Plans, directs, and manages the activities and operation of an alternative middle or high school including the leadership of certificated and classified staff, budget administration, complex educational charter and categorical program management. Ensures maintenance and upkeep of school site to promote a safe learning environment. Provides highly responsible and complex administrative support to the Assistant Superintendent.

NATURE AND SCOPE

Senior-level management position with full operational responsibility for school site operations. Responsible for planning, evaluating and initiating programs to meet current and future needs in education. The position ensures the efficient and cost effective educational delivery of service that complies with State and Federal programs to include maintenance of physical plant, curriculum development, categorical program compliance, budget preparation, hiring, firing and overseeing supervision and evaluation of educational staff. Positions at this level are required to develop and maintain program procedures, department systems and efficient work standards. Has full budgetary responsibility. Maintains cooperation, understanding, trust and credibility with a variety of groups, including site staff, fellow administrators, District Office, School Board, parents and community members. Work is performed in an office and classroom environment during regular day and includes evening and weekend hours as necessary.

ESSENTIAL TYPES OF DUTIES (Examples)

• Establishes implementation of academic standards and student performance. Coordinates curriculum and staff development and curriculum alignment. Analyzes student test scores and assessments to predict program efficiencies.

• Develops an advanced budget, which includes cost and revenue analysis and cost effective school site management, capital equipment, expansion or site modernization.

• Promotes a safe learning environment for students and staff.

• Builds and facilitates site leadership teams to execute student achievement goals.

• Ensures quality school and community relationship. Maintains positive contacts with the community, responds to parent concerns, establishes communication forums including parents, community meetings and school newsletters.

• Supervises personnel management of an educational and support staff.

• Plans and directs programs and ensures compliance with District, State and Federal regulations.

• Facilitates a variety of group processes with parents, staff, students and the community.

• Coordinates educational program activities with other departments and outside agencies. Prepares and presents staff reports and provides staff assistance to the Assistant Superintendent

• Designs, plans and assures implementation of improved site plan, staff development and programs.

• Promotes the school site and District goals and objectives and maintains public relations as it relates to educational services in the District and community.

• Serves as a point of coordination for various inter-department, inter-agency, etc., activities and events, some of which may require media notification.

• Coordinates and directly implements State testing programs.

• Performs other duties as required to accomplish the objectives of the position.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge and Skills: Professional specialization in principles and practices of California education school management, thorough knowledge of curriculum and instruction, budget practices, supervisory techniques, facility management and regulation, policies and procedures related to education. A broad working knowledge of organization management practices as applied to the analysis and evaluation of programs, policies and operational needs. Working knowledge of the principles and practices of school budget preparation and administration. Knowledge of the principles of supervision, training and performance evaluation; pertinent Federal, State and local laws, codes and regulations; and District organization, operations, policies and objectives. Well-developed human relations skill sufficient to prepare and deliver talks to large and diverse audiences, to motivate a multi-level team, and resolve confrontation. Requires advanced writing skills to prepare communication devices and reports.

Abilities: Plan, organize, direct and coordinate the work of management, supervisory, professional and technical personnel; delegate authority and responsibility. Select, supervise, train and evaluate staff. Provide administrative and professional leadership and direction at a school site. Identify and respond to issues, concerns and needs in a timely manner. Develop, implement and administer goals, objectives and procedures for providing effective and efficient operations. Prepare and administer large and complex budgets. Allocate limited resources in a cost-effective manner. Analyze problems, identify alternative solutions, project consequences of proposed actions and implement recommendations in support of goals. Research, analyze and evaluate new service delivery methods, procedures and techniques. Prepare clear and concise reports. Interpret and apply, Federal, State and local policies, procedures, laws and regulations.

Physical Abilities: Requires ordinary ambulatory skills to visit classrooms and various facilities within the school site, including actively supervising students and monitoring school safety; visual acuity to read letters and numbers; and speech and hearing ability to carry on conversations in large groups, one-on-one, and phone settings.

Education and/or Experience: Requires a Masters degree or equivalent from an accredited college or university with major course work in education or related field. Minimum of five years of increasingly responsible experience at a school site in administration or teaching, including two years of supervisory responsibility. Requires valid California Teaching and Administrative Credential.

Licenses and Certificates: A current California Administrative Services Credential, California Teaching Credential and valid California State Driver's License are required.
