The filling of this position is based upon continued funding in the Board of Education budget.

Note: Teachers dually certified in TESOL, Bilingual Education or ESL, with experience in Sheltered Instruction or fluency in a language other than English, will be given preference for all Stamford Public School positions.

General Statement:

The role of the High School Literacy Intervention and Support Specialist is to improve the quality of literacy instruction and intervention, including analysis of student performance, instructional design and delivery of targeted interventions, and frequent progress monitoring. The High School Literacy Intervention and Support Specialist is supported by district level administrators in the implementation of direct reading instruction. Evaluations will be conducted by the building administrator.

Major Responsibilities:
  • Plans and delivers explicit small-group literacy instruction (80% of time).
    • Establishes learning objectives consistent with appraisal of student needs utilizing Scientific Research Based Intervention (SRBI) Framework;
    • Plans for and utilizes proven instructional methods, resources, and evaluation techniques which engage and enable each student to achieve learning targets;
    • Guides the learning process toward the achievement of language arts grade level standards and expectations, establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, projects and communicates these objectives to students;
    • Continually collects, assesses, and analyzes student data to monitor student progress in meeting literacy targets; and
    • Makes instructional adjustments that accelerates student progress.
  • Models, supports, and coaches colleagues, students, parents, and community to devise and maintain student attainment of literacy targets including access to the Academic Support Center (20% of time)
  • Participates in team intervention planning for students.
  • Member of school and district level SRBI meetings.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the building administration.

Qualifications:
  • Connecticut State Department of Education Certification endorsed for English/Language Arts 7-12 (015) or Remedial Reading and Remedial Language Arts, 1-12 (102).
  • Five (5) years of successful teaching experience.
  • Strong knowledge of CT's SRBI/ Framework.
  • Knowledge of a range of effective literacy instructional strategies, assessment tools, and "best practices."
  • Demonstrated experience utilizing research-based interventions with diverse student populations.
  • Familiarity with national, state, and local ELA curriculum standards and frameworks.
  • Experience with planning and delivering standards-based literacy instruction.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with others, communicate ideas and best practices, and advance staff's knowledge and integration of literacy strategies.
  • Multilingual preferred.
  • Committed to the growth and academic development of all students.
  • Knowledge of and/or demonstrate the ability to learn and implement Operating Systems (i.e. Windows); Office suites (i.e. Microsoft Office, Google Docs); Presentation Software (i.e. PowerPoint, Keynote); Spreadsheets (i.e. Excel, Google Spreadsheets); Communication and Collaboration tools (i.e. Skype); Accounting Software (i.e. QuickBooks); Student Information Systems (i.e. Naviance, Power School); or any other technology deemed relevant for this position.
