Description of Service Opportunity:
The summer Freshman Academy will give rising 9th graders the opportunity to have a 4 week hybrid orientation of the high school to learn about CRLS and be able to ask questions and meet current staff before their first day of school. Participants will learn about school clubs, support programs, curriculum/classes, navigating the campus, and Google Suite tools/applications. They will also meet other rising 9th graders through this program. Our hope is that they will feel welcome and part of the community before their first day of 9th grade.
This hybrid program will take place at the Cambridge Rindge and Latin School from July 4 -July 29, 2022.
Teachers will work under the leadership of the school administration team to design a Freshman Academy experience to support students' smooth transition to high school. Teachers will be expected to stay in contact with parents and caregivers frequently at the onset and throughout the program.
In coordination with the building administration and the Academy Principal, support teachers will prepare and facilitate learning activities in one or more of the following areas: English Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies, Science, and/or Community Building/Social Emotional Learning Skills. Teachers will be expected to work with students using synchronous and asynchronous instructional strategies Monday through Friday during a 9:00 a.m. -12:00 p.m. block.
Core content areas will focus on understanding and assessing students' academic needs. Community-building and social emotional learning skills instruction will be based on SEL curriculum ideas aligned with the Community Meeting model already embedded within each Learning Community. There will be individual check-ins and group meetings aimed at creating relationships prior to the start of the year.
The overall goal is to create a meaningful connection and relationship between students and educators/staff from the high school before the start of the 2022-2023 school year.
Employment is contingent upon student enrollment.
