General Description

Leads and directs supervision and management of the athletic and activities program at a large [AAA] high school. Supervises up to 125 coaches and sponsors in over 50 sports, clubs and other activities. Directly responsible for the school calendar and all use of the building and grounds. Serves as the school representative to the Virginia High School League, the District, the Conference, the South Region, and is the compliance officer for all VHSL rules and regulations for all VHSL sports and activities. Responsible for the transportation of all athletic teams and student groups.

Essential Job Functions
  • Manages the athletic program, including in conjunction with the principal, hiring and evaluating all coaches.
  • Schedules all events within the building, including athletic contests, drama productions, concerts, assemblies, dances, fund-raiser, club and SCA activities, including the necessary game or event workers, police, officials and custodians.
  • Handles the budget and finances for the program, including depositing all funds from gate receipts, student equipment fees, and other funds, and completion of all required receipts and records. Paying all bills as due and paying all officials and event workers, including the completion of all required payroll forms.
  • Handles all field trips, including the completion of all required forms and approvals, and scheduling transportation for all athletic teams and other student groups.
  • Publishes the school calendar and schedules for the students, staff and community.
  • Schedules all non- school and community use of the building, including the completion of building use forms with the facilities department, scheduling custodial coverage and heat and air for the events.
  • Coordinates award programs and nominations for community based awards.
  • Serves as the school representative to the VHSL, appropriate district, conference and region.
  • Chairs or serves on the school crisis team and school safety committees.
  • Supervises multiple booster clubs.
  • Assists with administrative duties as needed; supervision of student activities during the day, pep rally, assemblies, ticket sales during lunches etc.
  • Demonstrates commitment to improving professional competence.
  • Assesses student learning on an ongoing basis and alters instruction to meet group/individual needs.
  • Uses the curriculum of the district to plan daily instructional activities.
  • May perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Considerable knowledge of the operation of the athletic and activities program at a large public high school; of VHSL, Chesterfield County and local school rules and regulations and policies. Considerable knowledge of turf and field management. Working skill in the use of a personal computer utilizing online scheduling and calendar systems. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies; to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Demonstrated ability to multitask on a constant basis. Demonstrated ability to handle money and financial reports properly. Demonstrated ability to supervise a large and varied staff in multiple sports and activities and to implement rules and regulations and policies.

Requirements

Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution; Master's degree preferred. Eligible for a Virginia teaching license. Building level leadership experience or equivalent experience and training sufficient to demonstrate the required, knowledge, skills and abilities. Experience working in secondary schools preferred.

Applicants with zero years teaching experience should submit references from their cooperating teacher and university supervisor. Applicants with recent teaching experience must provide references from principals and/or superintendents from all contracted teaching experiences within the past three (3) years. If experience is not within the past three (3) years, references from the last contracted work experience should be provided.

Applicants without direct classroom teaching experience should submit (2) references from the current employer, including one supervisory reference.
