General Description
Recruits and enrolls children for the Head Start program. Assists families with accessing mental health services in collaboration with Chesterfield County Mental Health. Engages in a collaborative partnership with families to establish mutual trust and to identify family goals and strengths, as well as necessary services and other supports through the Family Partnership Agreement process. The employee will ensure all students have updated medical and dental forms and classrooms are meeting Head Start standards. The employee works independently with minimal supervision. Extensive use of good judgment, effective time management and organizational skills are required.
Essential Job Functions
  • Recruits and enrolls children following current recruitment/enrollment/eligibility requirements. Maintains a current enrollment waiting list and in conjunction with immediate supervisor, fills vacancies with children who are eligible for the program. Assists families enrolled after the initial program orientation to complete required paperwork. Responds to general inquiries related to Head Start enrollment eligibility.
  • Conducts home visits to assist families in identifying strengths and to set goals through completion of the Family Partnership Agreement and to assist families in fully utilizing available community resources. Coordinates with other Head Start staff, school system staff and community agencies to ensure that the children enrolled in the Head Start classrooms and their families receive the maximum amount of services from the program and to respond to parent issues and complaints; arranges meetings between head start teachers and parents. Research community resources for families and organize and maintain accurate, up-to-date information on community agencies.
  • Develops and maintains a contact log for each family, recording all family contacts and referrals. Updates and maintains child and family records. Maintains strict confidentiality of family/children records and information.
  • Plans Parent Workshops, Parent Committee Meetings and assists with the Health Advisory Committee and Policy Council.
  • Meets bi-monthly with family service team, meets regularly with the supervisor and attends all appropriate Head Start meetings and trainings.
  • Assists in classrooms on a regular basis for observation of children, teacher support, field trips, etc.
  • Performs safety checks on classrooms and outside equipment.
  • Ensures schools have up-to-date health records and records health information into the ChildPlus system.
  • Submits appropriate reports and other paperwork in accordance with established deadlines and time frames.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Working knowledge and skills in the area of family engagement. Working knowledge of mental health services and community resources pertaining to mental health; knowledge of Head Start Performance Standards and other local, state and federal requirements. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing and establish and maintain effective work relationships with parents, children, staff and community agencies. Demonstrated ability to maintain accurate records; to work independently and assume responsibility without direct or continuous supervision and to manage time efficiently and effectively.

Requirements

Bilingual candidates strongly preferred. Experience working with children and families. A credential or certification in social work, human services, family services, counseling or a related field is required. Valid Va. Driver's License is required. An Associate's or BS Degree in a related field is preferred.
