POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Assistant Business Manager

EMPLOYMENT PERIOD: 12 months to begin July 1, 2022

SALARY: Commensurate with experience

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Accounting.

2. Other baccalaureate degrees from an accredited four-year college or university in Finance,
Business Administration, or other business-related curriculum may be considered but shall
include a minimum of fifteen (15) specified semester hours successfully completed in
accounting from the following course list: a. Principles of Accounting I and II (6 semester
hours) b. Intermediate Accounting I and II (6 semester hours) c. Advanced Accounting (3
semester hours) d. Governmental Accounting (3 semester hours) e. Managerial Accounting
(3 semester hours) f. Auditing (3 semester hours g. Cost Accounting (3 semester hours h.
Business Law (3 semester hours) i. Financial Management (3 semester hours) j. School
Finance or School Law (3 semester hours)

3. A minimum of three years' accounting experience with management position in finance and
administration in private or public sector.

4. Proficient in the use of computer technology for accounting and other budget
administration tasks

5. Extensive knowledge of the principles, methods, techniques, practices, and mandated
accounting system of budget administration and budget planning operations for
Mississippi school districts

6. Ability to plan, assign, and direct a staff of subordinates

7. Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors, the school board, department
heads, county/city officials, other school employees and other stakeholders

REPORTS TO:

CFO/Business Manager

JOB GOAL:

To assist in supporting and enhancing the educational mission of the school district through
careful planning (budgeting based on needs and available resources), sound fiscal management
(how to get the most and the best from available funds), and effective budget administration
(following proper procedures, meeting deadlines, leaving clear audit trails, balancing accounts,
etc.)

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assist with oversight of the financial resources and financial data of the district. The Assistant
Business Manager will assist with completing the following duties and responsibilities as assigned
by the CFO/Business Manager:

1. Collaborates with the CFO to provide fiscal oversight and formulate decisions based
on financial data to meet the district's goals and support the strategic plan.
2. Serves as a resource for and participates in the development of annual and longrange
educational plans for the school district
3. Plans and organizes cost center accounting system (computer print-outs) for each
cost center
4. Plans and causes to be developed software programs to support accounting and other
departmental procedures
5. Plans with classified employees assigned to the department the functions and operations of
the department and the individual assignments for each employee
6. Assists with the annual budget process and monitors budget throughout the year.
7. Collects and makes available tax and other fiscal data needed for district planning purposes
8. Ensures that all funds are received and deposited in an approved depository
9. Maintains various required accounts to comprehend and to account for all funds
10. Implements and maintains the state required accounting program for school districts
11. Prepares and submits for board approval each month current bills to be paid
12. Prepares and submits to the State Department of Education budget reports and budget
information as required
13. Invests surplus or currently unused funds in accordance with Mississippi law;
maintains current knowledge of cash flow
14. Efficiently implements computer software programs to accomplish numerous
financial management and accounting tasks
15. After Board authorization, releases payment of funds
16. Maintains complex financial records and makes periodic and special financial reports
17. Ensures compliances with various local, state, and federal requirements
18. Supervises retirement program records, reporting, and services
19. Supervises employee insurance programs, records, and services
20. Supervises payroll operations and employee check disbursal
21. Supervises account reconciliation and other control procedures
22. Assist in recruiting, hiring, training, supervising and evaluating all support staff in the
business office.
23. Ensures that staff members are kept current, through appropriate in-service, with the
state-of-the-art technology for their operations
24. Provides financial and budgetary data to principals and department heads in a timely
manner as a means for developing and maintaining an effective educational program
25. Participates in or initiates the formation of financial and budgetary policies intended
to strengthen and improve program performances
26. Provides information to supervisors for decision making regarding employee fringe
benefit programs
27. Advises supervisors regarding legal complications involving financial transactions
28. Prepares reports and other communications and disseminates those to various appropriate
audiences
29. Attends school board and local community meetings as well as school district, regional,
and state professional meetings
30. Makes formal and informal reports and presentations to appropriate audiences
31. Utilizes specific criteria to evaluate departmental performance and productivity
32. Adjusts departmental processes and/or functions based on data derived from evaluation
33. Utilizes appropriate instruments and processes to evaluate performance of
assigned personnel
34. Cooperates with auditors and provides information to them as requested.
35. Performs other duties as assigned

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

238 days annually with salary in accordance with the Administrative Salary Schedule as approved by
the Board of Trustees

EVALUATION:

Performance of the Assistant Business Manager will be evaluated in accordance with provision of
Board policy.
