Hunt Middle School is seeking an experienced child-centered teacher with licensure in Physical Education to teach middle school level, physical education classes.

The Physical Education Teacher position is a unionized, exempt position that will report to the Principal. The ideal candidate will cooperate with and support faculty and staff in providing services for students. Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills are necessary for planning and implementing exercise-based learning, monitoring students, and evaluating student outcomes. Responsibilities include preparing and completing appropriate reports/paperwork, demonstrating and assisting with skills being taught, and establishing and enforcing rules of conduct. The Physical Education Teacher will take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities. May also perform other tasks and duties as appropriate and /or assigned by the Superintendent, building principal, or their designee(s).

The Essential Functions of this position include
  1. Set up equipment prior to class.
  2. Upkeep gym equipment and/or research additional equipment needs.
  3. Supervise students in the gymnasium and cafeteria, or outside on the athletic field.
  4. Teach safety rules specific to the activity.
  5. Create substitute lesson plans as needed.
  6. Collaborate with support faculty and staff for students who require lesson modifications.
  7. Participate in fire drills, or other safety procedures as required.
  8. Provide an atmosphere and environment conducive to learning through intellectual, social-emotional, and physical development growth
  9. Maintain and enforce District policies, regulations, and procedures.
  10. Maintain a high level of confidentiality in accordance with Federal Law (FERPA).
  11. Maintain attendance in accordance with established days/hours of work.
  12. Additional duties assigned to support classroom instruction and operation.

The required education and experience for this position include
  • Education:
      1. Minimum Required:
      2. Bachelor's degree.
      3. Vermont Teacher certification with a physical education endorsement.
  • Experience:
    1. Minimum Required:
    2. Experience in middle school best practices.
  • Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities:
  • Working knowledge : Sufficient familiarity with the subject to know basic principles and terminology and to understand and solve simple problems.
  • General knowledge : Sufficient knowledge of a field to perform most work in normal situations. The work calls for comprehension of standard situations and includes knowledge of most of the significant aspects of the subject.
  • Thorough knowledge : Advanced knowledge of the subject matter. The work calls for sufficient comprehension of the subject area to solve unusual as well as common work problems, to be able to advise on technical matters, and to serve as a resource on the subject for others in the organization.


SALARY: As per the Master Agreement between the Burlington Board of School Commissioners and the Burlington Education Association.
