Job Summary
The Teacher Expert, Behavior K-12 provides ongoing staff development, program oversight, and curricular guidance under the direct supervision of a school principal.
This position requires a valid Alaska educator certificate. The number of work days is based upon the AEA negotiated pay scale. Information on the pay scale can be found online on our Labor Relations Department website. Positions that are 0.50 FTE to 1.0 FTE are associated with the Alaska Teachers' Retirement System (TRS), positions that are 0.40 to 0.49 FTE are associated with the Alaska Employees' Retirement System (PERS). Positions that are 0.39 FTE or less are not eligible for state retirement benefits.

Job Requirements
The following are required:
  1. Valid Alaska initial, professional, or master teaching certificate or type C counselor certificate.
  2. Evidence of content knowledge shown by:
    1. a posted degree in the content area of this position; or
    2. a posted minor in the content area of this position; or
    3. passing Praxis Subject Assessments scores (formerly Praxis II) in the content area of this position; or
    4. an endorsement in the content area of this position

The following are preferred:
  1. A minimum of three years of teaching or related experience in behavior management.
  2. Demonstrated ability to work harmoniously with administrators, teachers, parents, and community groups.
  3. Evidence of strong written, verbal, presentation, and organizational skills.
  4. Demonstrated ability to self-direct and manage time, and ability to adjust work day and/or hours to accommodate department needs.

Essential Job Functions
  1. Assists the implementation of Multi-Tiered System of Support in the area of behavior and social-emotional learning (SEL).
  2. Collaborates with staff to develop and implement a school-wide positive behavior support system, using district supported programs and curriculum such as CHAMPS, Respected & Connected and Second Step to address the needs of all children.
  3. Collaboratively creates site-based systems to support Tier 1 practices for both school and district initiatives.
  4. Provides comprehensive coaching for classroom teachers on classroom management, CHAMPS implementation, and differentiated behavior support.
  5. Provides instructional support to teachers for SEL curriculum including model or team-teaching.
  6. Collaboratively organizes and facilitates school-wide positive behavior incentive programs.
  7. Collects, organizes, and analyzes school-wide data including behavioral screening data and Tier 1 implementation data.
  8. Actively participates on the Foundations Team and Student Support Team.
  9. Organizes and facilitates professional development and training for staff and other stakeholders on positive behavior supports.
  10. Assists and supports teachers in collecting baseline and progress monitoring data collection for students needing additional behavioral support.
  11. Collaboratively organizes, facilitates, and implements district-elected Tier 2 behavior interventions.
  12. Supports teachers in problem-solving for students with challenging behaviors and providing differentiated behavior support.
  13. Consistently models a positive, strengths-based approach towards children.

Physical /Mental Demands
The physical demands of this job require frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking and hearing. Specific visual abilities are also required. The employee is regularly required to reach with his/her hands and arms and occasionally lift items weighing less than 40 lbs. Additionally, the employee must be able to understand vague and implicit instructions, be able to readily recall facts and details, handle conflict and make effective decisions under pressure. The employee must have the ability to effectively manage the stress of working with students, parents, and other employees representing diverse cultures, personalities, and work styles in a dynamic work environment.

Work is performed in a professional environment with a wide variety of individuals having differing functions, personalities and abilities, including working with diverse groups of people in a variety of different settings.

While performing the duties of this job the employee may be regularly exposed to a video display. The employee may be exposed to outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
