Special Education Teacher

Duties:
  • Adapt lessons for the purpose of implementing the IEP goals and meeting the special needs of students.
  • Center instruction on high expectations for student achievement.
  • Provide clear and intentional focus on subject matter content and curriculum.
  • Recognize individual student learning needs and develop strategies to address those needs.
  • Advise parents and/or legal guardians of student progress for the purpose of supporting teacher's expectations for developing methods for improvement and/or reinforcing classroom goals in the home environment.
  • Assess student's social needs (e.g. behavioral, motor development, communication, etc.) and academic needs for developmental level, vocational abilities, etc.) for the purpose of evaluating students and family requirements and success of the program.
  • Collaborate with school personnel, agencies and community agencies (e.g. social service agencies, caretakers for the purpose of developing and modifying the program to maximize the quality of student outcomes, development and planning curriculum.
  • Develop, monitor and evaluate specially designed instructional programs for the students on his/her caseload.
  • Work cooperatively with classroom teachers who have special education students in general education class, interpreting the abilities and disabilities of these students to the entire staff, and assisting the student with assignments. Direct educational assistants, volunteers and/or student aides for the purpose of providing an appropriate school program and addressing the needs of individual students.
  • Demonstrate effective teaching practices.
  • Use multiple student data elements to modify instruction and improve student learning.
  • Instruct students with individualized special needs for the purpose of developing appropriate academic and adaptive skills through a defined course of study.
  • Establish and maintain standards of student behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive classroom environment.
  • Provide individual or small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of students and to accommodate circumstances where a variety of projects are being worked on simultaneously.
  • Establish rapport, communicate and collaborate with parents and the school community.
  • Exhibit collaborative and collegial practices focused on improving instructional practice and student learning
  • Manage student behavior for the purpose of providing a safe and an optimal learning environment.
  • Prepare teaching materials and reports for the purpose of implementing lesson plans and providing support for teacher and student progress.
  • Report incidents for the purpose of maintaining personal safety of students.
  • Administer medication, first aid and/or health care requirements as may be required for the purpose of providing specialized treatment and/or monitoring medical conditions of students.
  • Meet and confer with colleagues and support staff as necessary.
  • Foster and manage a safe, positive learning environment.
  • Maintain professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district.
  • Perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Consistently deal with people in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Valid Washington State Teaching Certificate.
  • Endorsement in Special Education, Reading, Language Arts and Mathematics.
  • First Aid/CPR Right Response Trained.
  • Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance.
  • Skills to motivate students, communicate effectively with individuals from varied educational and cultural backgrounds, direct support personnel, demonstrate student activities and evaluate student performance.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of computers and computer applications; ability to integrate technology into classroom instruction.
  • Experience and/or training with cultural, ethnic and language diversity is preferred.
  • Abilities to stand and walk for prolonged periods, perform a variety of specialized and responsible tasks, manage records, establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, parents, other school personnel schedule and deadlines; significant physical abilities include reaching/handling, talking/hearing conversation, visual acuity/depth perception; and may include lifting/carrying up to 50 lbs.

Skills, Knowledge and/or Abilities Required:

- Responsible for the delivery of a structured environment that includes the use of diverse evidence-based strategies in support of students with behavioral and academic needs.
1. Ability and training to use and administer varied educational/ developmental assessment instruments including, but not limited to: Woodcock-Johnson Psycho-Educational Battery, Kaufman, WIAT-II Reading Inventory, etc.
2. Knowledge of and experience in evidence-based strategies for working with students with significant behavioral challenges (Applied Behavior Analysis, Executive Functioning, etc.).
3. Experience in setting up and using data monitoring systems for behavioral management of student.
4. Knowledge of and experience in developing and implementing Functional Behavior Assessments and Positive Behavioral Intervention Plans.
5. Provide behavioral support/strategies/coaching to school based staff and parents.
6. The teacher may be exposed to aggressive student behaviors to include biting, kicking, hitting, and throwing things. May be required to wear and utilize safety equipment designed to minimize the risk of injury to the teacher, and others.
