High School Science/Physical Education

Summary: Teaches science and physical education to high school students. Instructs students using a variety of teaching methods and materials. Prepares lessons, units and related assessments consistent with course performance expectations for science and physical education standards. An inquiry science approach to teaching is preferred.

  • Plans, develops, implements and assesses courses of instruction consistent with district approved curriculum, Course specific Performance Objectives and the Washington State Learning Standards.
  • Possesses strong academic and experiential background in teaching science with an emphasis on Assessment For Learning concepts.
  • Able to use a variety of instructional strategies and methods to ensure high levels of student engagement and academic achievement.
  • Able to promote high expectations, demonstrate a caring attitude and establish an environment that supports high achievement in students.
  • Demonstrated the ability to motivate students in a positive manner by using positive and productive techniques for improving student behavior and manages classroom efficiently and effectively.
  • Incorporates the teaching of science and the student application of higher order thinking skills as major components of the instructional program.
  • Uses technology appropriately as part of the classroom management environment and integrates technology into student learning activities.
  • Effectively communicates with parents using a variety of methods.
  • Assists in the enforcement of school rules, maintains student attendance, conduct and academic performance records.
  • Actively participates in faculty and staff meetings.
  • Demonstrated enthusiasm, flexibility and commitment to students reaching high learning standards.
  • Understanding of formative assessments and evidence of using assessments in class preferred.
  • Prior experience in teaching Advanced Placement science courses preferred, but not required.
  • Demonstrated experience in working collaboratively with administration.
  • Sponsors and directs a 9-12 Science Fair to take place during the school year.
Qualification Requirements: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
  • Ability to converse in Spanish preferred
  • Experience preferred with Assessment for Learning
  • Experience preferred with Response to Intervention strategies
  • Evidence of classroom management
  • Prior successful experience at a high school/middle school
  • Demonstrated understanding and appreciation of teaching students in poverty
  • Must possess or acquire and maintain a valid Washington State driver's license
  • As a condition of employment, newly-hired employees must obtain Washington State Patrol and FBI fingerprint background clearance and furnish proof of identity and employment authorization status

Education and/or Experience:
  • A minimum of a bachelor's degree
  • Endorsement in Secondary Science and Physical Education required
  • Possess a current 4-12 Washington State Teaching Certificate
  • Advanced degree with a science emphasis preferred
  • Prior successful experience in teaching science in a secondary setting

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. Must be capable of being mobile to move throughout the school facilities, grounds and community settings.

Teachers must possess a high level of ability to perform reading, writing and numerical abilities. Must have clarity of vision at 20 inches or less on a frequent basis and 20 feet or more occasionally. Defective near and far visual acuity may adversely affect job performance and/or safety of others. Depending on work assignment, ability to identify and distinguish colors may be important, capable of frequent activities requiring perceiving the nature of sounds by the ear to communicate, instruct, counsel and direct work of students.

Classroom teachers must be capable of performing detailed work in reference to preparation, computation of data and analyzing information both verbally and in written form. Must be capable of making decisions that can affect student's educational process and emergency situations that may occur when working with students.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret abstract mathematical concepts and convey that meaning to students. Ability to perform a variety of detailed work tasks at a fast pace using common sense and high order cognitive skills.
