Job Statement

This position has been created to enhance the ability for the district to maintain the necessary cleaning/disinfecting protocols mandated during the COVID-19 pandemic. The position of Custodian will require the ability to change work location (Floating) and/or hours with minimal notice.

The job of Custodian is to maintain the general appearance and condition of the facilities owned and operated by the District; to provide students with a safe, attractive, comfortable, clean, and efficient place in which to learn, play and develop; must be able to perform essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.


Education and Experience
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Job related experience preferred
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to follow and give verbal and written directions
  • Physical strength to do moderate lifting and bending
  • Ability to work either in confined quarters or high places, indoors, or outdoors
  • Thorough knowledge of tools, materials, and methods used in maintaining the cleanliness of buildings and grounds
  • Demonstrated aptitude for successful fulfillment of assigned performance and responsibilities
  • Ability to work under pressure and deal with emergencies in a calm and effective manner
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.

Working Conditions

Working conditions may include but are not limited to: high paced environment with constant interruptions; requires a great deal of energy, flexibility, and patience to meet many and varied situations; must feel comfortable dealing with a diverse range of behaviors which may include upset or distraught staff and community members; working with chemicals associated with cleaning and exposure to various weather conditions not limited to freezing weather, snow, rain, and heat. Significant physical abilities include moving/lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling/stooping/kneeling/crouching/reaching/handling/fingering with near and far visual acuity.

Essentials Functions, Duties and Responsibilities

This list of essential functions is not exhaustive and may be supplemented as necessary and without notice. Depending upon individual assignments, this position performs all or a combination of the following duties:
  • Sweep, mop, scrub, and sand finish floors; dust, wash, and polish furniture, woodwork; empty and clean waste receptacles; wash windows and walls
  • Clean and sanitize restrooms, dressing rooms, shower rooms, drinking fountains, kitchens, and otherwise maintain over-all sanitary conditions of facility
  • Perform minor repair and preventative maintenance
  • Maintain clean, safe, and attractive entrances and grounds
  • Move and arrange furniture and equipment
  • Clean and maintain light fixtures; replace light bulbs
  • Maintain security of buildings; turn out lights; lock doors and windows; maintain awareness of unauthorized persons on or about the premises
  • Replenish restroom and custodial cart supplies
  • Operate power cleaning equipment
  • Report ay safety, sanitary, and fire hazards
  • In the absence of head custodian, be responsible for the operation of the heating plant and electrical, mechanical, and plumbing devices as directed by the building principal, and notify responsible persons in case of malfunction of the heating plant or related items.
  • Assist with special events held at the building as time permits
  • Operate and maintain equipment as required; insure its safe and proper use; protect the District equipment and supplies against pilferage, loss, theft, and/or abuse
  • Obtain and maintain all licenses and certificates necessary to accomplish assigned duties and responsibilities
  • Shovel snow from the main doors to the bus drop-off areas and main public entrances
  • Set up, take down, and put away cafeteria tables
  • Police and pick-up trash and litter adjacent to campus buildings
  • Maintain continued awareness of energy conservation
  • Comply with District rules and regulations
  • Conduct all work in a safe manner as specified by WISHA regulations and district rules
  • Other duties as assigned
Terms of Employment
  • 8 hrs per day
  • 260 Calendar (248 work days / 12 holidays)
  • Continuing position based on funding
  • Criminal history clearance/fingerprinting (cost to applicant waived if currently in the OSPI database showing clearance within the last two years)
  • COVID 19 vaccination or approved YCS exemption
  • Performance of this job will be evaluated at least once annually in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on evaluation of employees
