OFFICE OF SCHOOL ADMINISTRATION

FERNWOOD MONTESSORI SCHOOL is actively recruiting experienced and dynamic candidates for the Principal position. Fernwood Montessori School is located in Milwaukee's Bay View Neighborhood on the city's south side and serves over 700 children in grades K3-8. Fernwood Montessori School Staff works to inspire all children to achieve their fullest potential through Montessori philosophy, principles, and specialized materials. Students will be prepared for active global citizenship through intrinsic development in an environment that fosters equity, inquiry, flexibility and responsibility. We are looking for an individual who:
  • Values the expertise of teachers, staff, and parents and uses these resources to enhance the success of the school.
  • Experience with administering and or developing school budgets, internal accounts, assessments, discretionary funds, and grants.
  • Experience in grant writing and securing additional resources for the school and a proven ability to leverage resources to maximum benefit.
  • Familiarity with implementing strategic supports for the needs of students with disabilities.
  • Clear understanding of Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) best practices, rules, regulations,and policies.
  • Is Educator Effectiveness certified or able to secure certification within 60 days of hire.
  • Highly accurate with teacher observation and feedback to ensure effective teaching in each classroom. Experience in implementing with fidelity the Educator Effectiveness System. Ability to lead teachers in developing and delivering effective Common Core curriculum and assessments in literacy and math.
  • Demonstrates the ability to impact student outcomes through analyzing data to inform instruction that will enhance the school's student achievement.
  • Ability to delegate authority and responsibility clearly and appropriately; assess expertise of self and others; determine tasks to be assigned; and recognize tasks that need outside assistance.
  • Leads the school by consistently building high performance teams, delegating responsibility, creating opportunities for professional development to foster individual growth in instructional practices, and implementing the school vision.
  • Experience with developing and creating effective integrated services throughout the full
  • school day, such as supervision strategies, and extended day, such as health, educational, recreational, and social activities for students and parents.
  • Manages school resources and facilities effectively, uses knowledge of policies and procedures to make sound decisions, and ensures the efficient operation of the school; proactively maintains an attractive, clean, safe, and inspiring physical space for learning.
  • Creates and maintains a school environment that focuses on an atmosphere of caring and respect, emphasizes high academic expectations, and maintains discipline and order for all students by Implementing a proven system for discipline that is research-based with built-in incentives and rewards to boost self-esteem and good citizenship and a strong record of enforcing the student code of discipline.
  • Demonstrates visionary and innovative leadership by setting high expectations for students and staff, including the ability to motivate, build teams, and encourage and increase parent involvement.
  • Works effectively with a broad range of students, faculty, parents, alumni, and community members establishing strong ties and developing a sense of shared ownership among the school partners and stakeholders.
  • Motivates and supports students, teachers, staff, and parents with compassion and fairness.
  • Embraces working collaboratively and constructively with staff, students, families, and community stakeholders.
  • Collaborates with families and community members, responds to diverse community interests and needs, and uses community resources.
  • Requests and responds to parent and community feedback in a timely manner; is accessible to parents, staff, and community.

BASIC FUNCTION: Supervises, coodinates and manges the activities of the entire building and staff.

SALARY RANGE: $87,828 - $127,655 (220 days)

Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in education with an emphasis in Administrative leadership or Curriculum and Instruction
  • A valid Wisconsin Principal, 351 license:
    • Note: Applicants that do not currently hold this license or have not completed a certification program awarding this license, may still qualify for the position if they enroll in and complete a certification program awarding the #51 principal license within 2 years until you complete the certification program, the District will request the license on your behalf upon appointment to the position for a maximum of two years.
  • Five (5) years of professional education experience as a tenured, licensed teacher in a K-12 setting
  • Two-years of successful school-building administrative/supervisory experience in a K-12 setting.


Responsibilities

  • Provides leadership for the activities supporting the Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) educational process to include establishing and maintaining the learning climate, programming of classes to meet student needs, supervising all support services for the school and ensuring proper student conduct and discipline procedures are maintained.
  • Supervises the school's teaching process, utilizing resources from central office as necessary.
  • Plans, organizes and directs the implementation of all school activities and evaluates them (with assistant principals, if appropriate) in accordance with the policies of the Board of School Directors and/or directives of the superintendent.
  • Initiates, designs and implements programs to meet specific needs of assigned school within guidelines established by administration.
  • Establishes and maintains a favorable relationship with local community groups and individuals to foster understanding and to solicit support for school activities. Communicates Board policies and directives from the superintendent to the community. Meets with parents to discuss and resolve student problems.
  • Ensures that all newly assigned staff members are oriented to the building and their various departments and ensures continuing professional development as necessary.
  • Coordinates various support activities to include maintenance and repair of the building and grounds, school nutrition and lunch program, recreation department activities on campus, financial, budgeting and accounting functions, library and/or bookstore functions and clerical activities.
  • Supervises and implements specialized education programs offered at the school.
  • Directs various athletic programs, extra-curricular activities, music and dramatics programs and school sponsored social events.
  • Evaluates and counsels all staff members regarding their individual performance according to established policies and Employee Handbook.
  • Attends district meetings as required. Maintains currency in professional field through appropriate literature and attendance at conferences and seminars.
  • Conducts regular staff meetings to ensure staff is updated on MPS policies and new and emerging research.
  • Actively supports the MPS Strategic Plan.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
