Job Title: Security Guard

Location: As Assigned by OPS Administration

Reports To: Building Principal

Work Schedule/FLSA Status: Full-time, 10 month / Non- Exempt, 40 hours per week, 196 days per year

Salary Schedule: This is a negotiated position. Wages are administrated consistent with the negotiated agreement.

Position Purpose: The Security Guard promotes attitudes of student responsibility and assists administrators, teachers and staff with the safety of students and staff and the security of the facilities.

Essential Performance Responsibilities
  • Patrols and monitor hallways, stairwells, toilet facilities, outside facilities, and other public and unsupervised places of the school to ensure the safety and well-being of students and staff and the security of the facility.
  • Ensures a smooth traffic flow of students through the hallways, assisting students with on-time arrival to class and to assigned locations.
  • Assists with student supervision in the breakfast and lunch periods and with morning arrival and afternoon dismissal of students.
  • Assists with arrival and dismissal traffic duties.
  • Remove disruptive students from classes when needed.
  • Notify building administration, police, and/or appropriate emergency personnel of any emergency, potentially dangerous or unusual situations.
  • Assists administrators and staff in crisis and emergency situations.
  • Assists with fire drills and other emergency building evacuations.
  • Assists visitors with directions and secure proper identification.
  • Detects, investigates and reports unauthorized or suspicious persons, vehicles and activities.
  • Challenge unauthorized visitors and escort them to exits.
  • Promote student responsibility for behavior and attitude by serving as a role model and dressing and grooming professionally.
  • Display ethical and professional behavior in working with students, parents, school personnel, and outside agencies associated with the school.
  • Participate in appropriate in-service and workshop programs as directed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Additional Duties
Performs other related tasks as assigned by the principal or other administrative staff as designated by the Superintendent.

Equipment: This position requires the ability to use basic office equipment such as computers, copiers, scanners, and fax machine. Must always comply with OPS's guidelines for equipment use.

Travel: Local travel required.

Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards:
  • Works in standard office and school building environments
  • Must have organization, time management, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to read and use information from written materials and visual displays.
  • Ability to work in standing/walking positions on a frequent basis throughout the work shift.
  • Ability to work outdoors during arrival and dismissal as well as for building ground checks
  • Ability to engage in physical activities to include but not limited to reaching overhead, squatting/bending, lifting, pushing and pulling, kneeling, climbing and running, required.
  • Additional demands may be required upon request from the Supervisor


Interrelations:
  • Contact with personnel within the district and with students, parents, and the community.
  • Will be working with a diverse population requiring the ability to handle all situations with tact and diplomacy.
  • Expected to interact with all internal and external customers in a friendly and professional manner.


Employee Punctuality and Appearance
  • In order for schools to operate effectively, employees are expected to perform all assigned duties and work all scheduled hours during each designated workday, unless the employee has received approved leave.
  • Any deviation from assigned hours must have prior approval from the employee's supervisor or building administrator.
  • All employees are required to report to work dressed in a manner that reflects a positive image of Omaha Public Schools and is appropriate for their position.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Hold a high school diploma or equivalency.
  • Experience in security related work or any equivalent combination of education and experience that would provide the noted knowledge, skills and abilities.
  • Law enforcement experience preferred.
  • Possess knowledge of, and the ability to apply, standard security procedures and best practices in school security.
  • Experience working in an urban, public education setting, preferred.
  • Successful experience working with children and youth.
  • Must have basic computer skills using Microsoft Office programs.
  • Have excellent integrity and demonstrate good moral character and initiative.
  • Exhibit a personality that demonstrates interpersonal skills to relate well with students, staff, administration, parents and the community.
  • Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively in English (both orally and in writing) using proper grammar and vocabulary.

Terms of Employment

This position is treated as a full-time non-exempt classified position. The terms of your employment will be governed by applicable state laws regulating employment in a Nebraska public school and Board of Education policies, as those laws and policies may change from time to time. If your position is represented by a collective bargaining representative, then your employment will also be governed by a negotiated agreement between OPS and that collective bargaining representative.

The offer of employment is contingent upon:

  • Obtaining and providing verification of all licenses, certificates, and other requirements for the position (e.g., Paraprofessionals obtaining "Highly Qualified status," etc.), as identified and maintaining all licenses, certificates, and requirements for your position throughout employment.
  • A background check which demonstrates to OPS that background is acceptable for the position.
  • Verification of U.S. citizenship or legal authorization to work in the United States.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (if required for position offered).
  • Successful completion of a tuberculosis skin test (if required for position offered).
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment medical examination to determine ability to safely and effectively perform the essential functions of the position.
