Multiple positions/sites available and there is the possibility to pair to create a 1.0 FTE: Cityview, Emerson (paired with another 0.50 FTE position at Emerson), Hall (paired with 0.50 K-2 Young Scholars Specialist at Hall) Jenny Lind , Lake Nokomis Keewaydin/Wenonah , MPS Online, Windom (paired with another position at Windom)

SUMMARY OF POSITION

The primary focus of this TOSA is to support both K-2 Math and K-2 Literacy programming and instruction. The TOSA understands the MPS MTSS process. They will coach teachers to use this tiered approach of differentiated instruction for all students in K-2 math and literacy.

  • Facilitate teams of teachers to use the MTSS Data Dives & Diagnostics Core Component to develop instructional plans responsive to student needs.
  • Ensure administration by teachers of required K-2 screeners and diagnostics.
  • Support teachers in the implementation of differentiated instructional strategies in math and literacy for grades K-2.
  • Support teachers in the development of cognitively demanding tasks to engage students individually and collectively in grades K-2 in math and literacy.
  • Support teachers in the use of strategies that foster increased higher levels of thinking for grades K-2 in math and literacy.
  • Coach teachers to create, administer, respond with appropriate assessments that measure growth in math and reading for all K-2 students and respond to meet student needs.
  • Increase teachers' capacity and confidence to implementation of K-2 math and literacy district approved core tier 1 and tier 2 curriculum

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The TOSA supports teacher efficacy in differentiated daily instruction in order to equitably increase academic growth and achievement forall learners in grades K-2. The TOSA will spend their FTE time working collaboratively with K-2 classroom teachers on a weekly basis by:

  • Coaching
  • Co-planning
  • Model teaching
  • Co-teaching

The TOSA will also support the teachers through the Levels of Service Model in MTSS, providing K-2 classroom teachers with strategies around:

  • Scaffolding
  • Accommodations
  • Tiered activities
  • Formative assessments to ensure diverse groups of learners and all ability ranges of students are addressed in the classroom.
  • Ensure administration by teachers of required K-2 screeners and diagnostics.

Coaches teachers in the required curricula using strategies that foster thinking, reasoning, and problem solving for grades K-2 in math and literacy.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES

  • Deep understanding of K-2 instructional practices in numeracy and early literacy.
  • Knowledge of assessment strategies, resources and appropriately differentiated materials, curriculum and instruction with an emphasis on math and literacy instruction for grades K-2.
  • Experience in and knowledge of equity principles and cultural competencies of academic standards and the district's mission, goals, programs, and curriculum to support K-2 teachers and sites (ie: Best practices PD by Indian Education or PD with OBSA).
  • Knowledge of effective instruction to support teacher's ability to further analyze, communicate, model, and assess elements of the teaching process while using academic standards in grades K-2.
  • Knowledge of unique student populations such as EL, SPED, and Advanced Learners, in order to ensure all sub-groups show adequate academic growth.
  • Ability to collaborate with all adults in the building regarding instructional strategies for students.
  • Ability to establish and maintain trustful, confidential and supportive relationships with teachers to help develop them as professionals.
  • Ability to foster collegiality and community among teachers through professional development.
  • Ability to encourage multiple perspectives and resolve conflicts in a professional manner.
  • Knowledge of adult learning needs and processes and how to use coaching cycles to maximize growth.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; excellent oral and written communication skills.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Valid Minnesota Teaching License
  • Has taken or is willing to take an early numeracy development class, such as, OGAP Additive Thinking, Thinking Math K-2, AVMR Math Recovery
  • Has taken or is willing to participate in early literacy professional development, such as, FAST earlyReading certification, PRESS training, dyslexia training, LETRS training.
  • A minimum of 5 years of classroom experience, preferably, but not required, in grades K-2.
  • grades K-2.

All TOSAs must attend district professional development twice a month provided by District DPFs in collaboration with other departments such as OBSA, Indian Ed., SPED, or Multi-Lingual. They will also attend additional training in June.

Final candidates may be invited to interview with a committee. Final appointment to this position will be contingent upon passing a criminal background check.
