  • Position: Substitute Custodian / Maintenance Technician
    Reports to: Supervisor
    Site: School
    Daily Rate: $11.50/hour


    SUBSTITUTE CUSTODIAN / MAINTEANCE TECHNICIAN:

    Purpose:

    Provides custodial services for the School Site on a daily basis by maintaining the facilities, grounds and equipment in good running condition in support of the student's health and welfare. Responsible for maintaining the physical asset(s) of the building, ancillary buildings and teacherage housing under the direction of the Maintenance Supervisor.

    Minimum Qualifications:
    • High School Diploma or general education degree (GED);
    • Knowledge of general custodial and/or maintenance practices preferred;
    • Some experience in cleaning floors, windows, bathrooms and furniture;
    • Knowledge of sanitation principles, safe cleaning chemicals and safety and health standards (state, federal, and district);
    • Must be able to move or lift up to 50 pounds without risk when unloading, moving or discarding materials, supplies and equipment;
    • Ability to communicate with students, parents and the general public in a professional manner;
    • Must possess a valid NM driver's license, with a good driving record;
    • Computer experience in data entry, e-mail, word processing preferred;
    • Ability to perform physically demanding work;
    • Ability to learn the appropriate use of cleaning products;

    Essential Duties:
    • Performs general routine housekeeping duties including, sweeping, vacuuming, dusting, emptying wastebaskets, and scrubbing bathrooms and kitchen sinks;
    • Washes windows, mirrors and glass doors;
    • Prepares for meetings by moving and setting up tables and chairs;
    • Change out light bulbs and fixtures as needed;
    • Uses tools to do minor repairs and hangs pictures as requested;
    • Conforms to safety standards as prescribed and reviews school site Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS);
    • Services soap dispensers, towel boxes, and similar containers;
    • Open and close up the building; ensure doors, windows and roof accesses are secured nightly;
    • Remove snow and ice accumulations from sidewalks and entry areas as needed;
    • Clear out weeds, pick-up trash, and maintain the grounds;
    • Cleans chalkboards, trays and erasers;
    • Moves and adjusts chairs, desks, tables, supplies, furniture and equipment;
    • Strips, seals and waxes floors;
    • Removes spots and graffiti from floors, walls, woodwork, furniture, carpets, and fixtures;
    • Operates power sweepers, polishers, and other power equipment;
    • May be required to move, assemble or disassemble furniture, equipment, or other items, or to assist other crafts in an emergency or as the need arises;
    • Performs general maintenance work inside and outside the physical plant such as ceiling, roof, electrical plumbing, concrete masonry, glazing, insulation, tile and pump, and fan repairs;
    • Perform district wide grounds maintenance work such as plowing, salting, field marking and maintenance of underground sprinkler system;
    • Recommends supplies and equipment for purchase and maintains the inventory of district-owned hand tools, equipment, hardware, materials and supplies;
    • Responsible for the completion of all work orders and preventive maintenance tasks as assigned;
    • Perform general maintenance work indoors and out of doors to include interior repairs, exterior repairs, HVAC, Electrical, Plumbing, Carpentry, Insulation, pumps, boiler, concrete, masonry, tile, glazing, etc.;
    • Responsible for the care and maintenance of district owned tools as issued or checked out for use;
    • Comply with all safety and OSHA requirements;
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

    Physical Functions:
    • Frequently stand, walk, push, pull, carry, reach, bend, kneel, stoop, handle, talk and hear; Occasionally climb, balance, crouch, and crawl;
    • Use repetitive hand, arm and finger motions and high motor activities;
    • Travels from one facility to another as necessary for training and picking up equipment and supplies;
    • Attend meetings during the day and in the evening;
    • Lift up to 50 pounds on occasion, 25 pounds frequently and up to 10 pounds constantly;
    • Walk various distances on even and uneven surfaces, indoors and outdoors;
    • Work in an environment with varying temperatures and noises;
    • Operate equipment with finger(s), hand, foot and eye coordination.

    Mental Functions:
    • Must be able to read cleaning products, Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), and other necessary literature;
    • Must be able to manage time and work independently;
    • Must be a team player;
    • Must be able to handle difficult people and difficult situations;

    Essential Equipment:
    • Operate phone, computer, scanner, printer, calculator, etc.;
    • Operate a vehicle and hold a valid driver's license;
    • Handle boxes of supplies;
    • Utilize measurement tools and hand tools;
    • Utilize various hand held equipment to include brooms, mops, shovels, picks, rakes, etc.;
    • Utilize various power/hand-operated equipment and machinery;
    • Utilize hand truck and dollies.
