    The Superintendent invites qualified and interested persons to apply for the position of Coordinator of School Transportation Services within the Office of Pupil Transportation.

    This title is governed by the New Jersey Civil Service Commission; meaning that if you are the successful candidate for this position, you will be placed as a provisional employee. At a later date you will be required to take an examination administered by the Civil Service Commission. Candidates must score and rank high enough on this examination in order to remain in the position as a permanent employee.

    DEFINITION: Under direction, has charge of and supervises operation, maintenance, scheduling and reporting, of a large fleet of school buses; does other related duties as required.

    QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

    1. Graduation from an accredited college with a Bachelor's degree.
    2. Three (3) years of supervisory experience involving the organization, planning, direction and scheduling of mass passenger transportation services.
    3. Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

    NOTE: Candidates who do not meet the above educational requirements may substitute additional work experience as described below on a year for year basis.
    NOTE: Appointee may be required to possess a Pupil Transportation Supervisor's Program Certificate issued by the New Jersey Department of Education.

    BASIC FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    1. Supervises operation, maintenance, scheduling and reporting of a fleet of school buses.
    2. Plans and supervises bus routes and makes adjustments in schedules or pupil assignments when necessary.
    3. Plans, organizes and conducts driver training courses, periodic refresher courses in safety and workshops for school bus drivers in cooperation with State Department of Education.
    4. Prepares cost estimates and budget recommendations and supervises expenditures in budget categories affecting bus transportation, such as funds for supplies, fuel, repairs, replacements and additions in accordance with established regulations.
    5. Maintains communications between all professional and nonprofessional personnel involved in pupil transportation, including parents, school principals and general public.
    6. Gives suitable assignments and instructions to staff and personnel involved in pupil transportation.
    7. Recruits, selects and recommends drivers and other transportation personnel to Business Manager and Board of Education.
    8. Compiles and prepares detailed and complex transportation reports and records for submission to Business Manager, Superintendent of Schools, County Superintendent and State Department of Education.
    9. Investigates all accidents involving school buses and recommends disciplinary action when appropriate.
    10. Supervises registration for licenses of all buses.
    11. Maintains a central record of use of all vehicular units, including running costs.
    12. May ride buses to note whether bus is in need of repair and whether safety provisions and sanitary conditions meet prescribed standards.
    13. May handle detailed and complex correspondence and maintains needed records and files.
    14. Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

    KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

    1. Knowledge of state and local laws, rules regulations, policies and procedures dealing with public bus operation.
    2. Knowledge of proper methods of making inspections.
    3. Knowledge of proper procedures used in operating and maintaining buses and of types of violations commonly found in bus operations.
    4. Knowledge of geography of jurisdiction.
    5. Knowledge of safety precautions followed in dealing with normal and handicapped children.
    6. Knowledge of problems involved in operation, maintenance, repair and supply of a fleet of school buses.
    7. Knowledge of current prices for parts, gasoline, oil, antifreeze, and bus replacement.
    8. Knowledge of problems involved in dispatching of several vehicles from a central pool.
    9. Ability to organize assigned work and develop effective working procedures.
    10. Ability to give suitable assignments and instructions to subordinates and to check performance of their work.
    11. Ability to direct operation of a fleet of school buses.
    12. Ability to use sound judgment and initiative in recommending trade-in and replacement of vehicles.
    13. Ability to work harmoniously with superiors, associates, employees and other persons interested in or concerned with work of pupil transportation department.
    14. Ability to make impartial investigations of accidents involving school buses and to recommend as necessary, disciplinary actions against employee involved.
    15. Ability to make detailed and complex studies and surveys concerning various phases of bus operation and maintenance, containing findings, conclusions and formal recommendations.
    16. Ability to handle detailed and complex correspondence and to establish and maintain needed records and files.
    17. Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
    18. Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.

    SALARY, EMPLOYMENT PERIOD AND UNION AFFILIATION
    1. Salary: $75,735 - $98,199
    2. Employment Period: Twelve (12) Months
    3. Union Affiliation: Local 32
